Thanksgiving meal plans (Read 95 times)

Hip Redux

Here's my working list - changes possible, but for now this is what I'm thinking -

    Turkey
    Stuffing
    Beet and goat cheese salad
    Sweet potato au gratin
    Garlic mashed potatoes
Roasted veggies - brussel sprouts, carrots, butternut squash, cauliflower
Haricot verts w/pine nuts and brown butter

Then dessert will be the classics - apple pie, pumpkin pie, etc.

    What are you guys having?

I want some of these things. Although I don't think the cauliflower belongs in the roasted veggies - use parsnips instead. Trust me on this.

I am not 100% clear on our menu, DW & DD2 will be taking care of it. I will be responsible for the all-important tasks of going for a run & watching football.

I'm sure it will include the basics:

        - turkey

        - stuffing (2 kinds - DW loves oyster stuffing, no one else does)

        - potatoes (mashed & sweet - give me a plain sweet potato with nothing on it thanks)

        - cranberry sauce (DW grew up with the stuff in the can, where the can imprints are a mark of quality, but I think I have turned her over to the real stuff)

        - some kind of veggies

        - pie (pumpkin & one other, probably chocolate cream)

DD1 as is tradition will not eat any of it (other than pie), and will probably make herself a PB&J sandwich or ramen noodles.

While we were in grad school, we had a Thanksgiving meal for those who didn't get a chance to go home - and it was just like this!  Except with cheap beer.  Ahh, memories.

This sounds so fun... Actually sounds a lot like my mom's side of the family thanksgiving/christmas dinners. The best food all year is my Dad's side of the family. Those people know how to fatten you up!

However this Thanksgiving we are spending the day with my Father-in-law and his wife and their kids. (In case your wondering my wife's parents are divorced). They are staying the night Thursday night and then Friday we are heading up to Gatlinburg where we will spend Friday and Saturday night, compliments of the in-laws then we will all head back home Sunday. This will involve FIL, his wife, plus my wife's sister+family and step sister+family. 4 kids ages 3-7 should be fun...

Just FYI Saturday will consist of lots of grilled meats, beer, copious amounts of desert food and the Iron Bowl.

I first read this as "grade school", and then I got to the part about the cheap beer, and I was thinking wow that is a pretty liberal education system.

What is this and do I like it?

                    ours is boring:

                    turkey (hopefully not too dry)

stuffing (maybe not boxed this year, we'll see)

mashed garlic potatoes (lots of garlic and butter)

maple glazed carrots (because we have LOTS of carrots from the CSA)

cranberry sauce (real AND fake because Phil likes the canned stuff)

                    MIL bringing turnips

                    desssert:

ANGEL FOOD CAKE (because it's the only think I know how to make GF)

                    Chocolate cream pie

                    peanut butter pie

                    fruit

                    what am I missing?

First year in many years I'm  not cooking (or cleaning)!!!!  Yippee, woooohoooo, I don't care what we have!  I think we'll have turkey though.

why couldn't you just say that?

seeing how we DESTROYED the last one, I figured it was safe to make again.

They're actually different, but essentially no one would care/know.  They are longer and thinner than green beans.

Plus, it sounds fancier that way.

Ours is pretty standard but the 2 items I stay clear of are cooked artichokes, and squash with marshmellows.

My wife has to work 12 - 8 on turkey day so we will eat dinner with the in-laws on Friday.  My daughter wants to make pizza for Thursday.
