Have you ever entered a race just to beat someone? (Read 347 times)

Brrrrrrr

Uffda

Maybe I'm actually getting competitive, or maybe it's just because I can.

I ran a 10 mile race last year. After I finished, they were having an awards ceremony and I heard a co-worker's name get an AG award for the 5k. I checked out his time, and I've beat it in the last 3 5k's I've done. I'm pretty sure when this race comes around next year I could squarely beat him. I'm almost to my 2 year runniversary, and I've put in the time, and boy-oh-boy do I want beat him.

Have you ever done something like that? Enter a race just to beat someone?

Uhhhh....my guess is that yes, lots of people have.

I ran a local 5k with my brother a few years ago. He darted out, and I passed him before the mile marker. I ran a 29:05 and he ended up with about a 45:00 5k.

LOL, now that I think about it the less strange it seems. I just don't talk with this guy so it almost feels sort of stalker-like.

I may be wrong but I don't think he meant beating others in general, rather one specific person. Again just my interpretation.

While I do enter races to beat people I've never entered one because I wanted to beat any certain person I knew. There was a guy who used to show up and beat me pretty regularly. The past 18 months I've turned the table. We don't know each other personally but I like seeing him at races as we battle pretty evenly.

No, but a few people have come up to me and told me that their goal was to beat me specifically.   I have noticed when I've come out ahead of people who used to finish in front of me, but I've never specifically entered a race to beat them... or anyone.

No, but I did get some smug satisfaction over beating someone that I knew that had actually been pretty unpleasant to me not too long before that.  I'm so mature.  Undecided

Yeah, I should have added a winky to it. I was joking. Smile

Never any one person in particular.  I just try to better my own times, and where I fall in the results is what it is.

This is actually the reason that I am on FB.  Ever since I was 12, I held a resentment against the popular kid in school for a) beating me in everything we competed in and b) picking me last for the softball game held every day during P.E....fast forward 30 years later and along comes FB.  What you say?  This guy is on FB? well then..let's see here.... oh look, as an adult, he's crashed and burned and he's no longer physically active.  Resentment solved.. can delete FB acct now and sleep in peace.  +1 for the Homecoming Queen crashing and burning as well...bonus.

I have never ENTERED a race just to beat someone.  But I, like most of our friends, do check results after some big races to see if we have finished in front of certain people who may or many not have 1) annoyed us, 2) put in similar training to us, or 3) don't like the cuts of our jibs.  Etc etc

I've never entered a race just to beat a particular person, but I've been in races where one of my goals has been to beat a particular competitor.

Lol, you funny. I often think to myself "Wow, what happened to you?!" when I see that on FB or IRL. 3/4 of the former cheerleaders at my HS are very large & unhealthy now and the "hot" guys are bald(nothing wrong with that) and rather flabby. Not that I wasn't much better about 3 years back! But yeah, how things & time changes people!

I haven't entered a race to beat anybody except my last PR. But whatever gets you out there!

I've never entered a race to best someone else who was running, but I did get satisfaction over beating someone's PR.  My walking buddy's daughter has been a marathoner for years.  She's the one that got us started doing HM's, and ultimately, how I started running.  Her father thinks she is the Goddess of Running. No discussion or comment on anything running, exercise or health related can be believed until he runs it past her, even if it's a direct quote from the CDC or the Mayo Clinic, or some other unreliable source. Roll eyes

So in my very first HM, I took a little childish glee in beating her HM PR.  Goddess of Running, take THAT!  I'm not sure what her PR is now, and he's backed down a little.  But for a few minutes, I won.
