Friday Penguins will not get lost this time! (Read 20 times)

Zelanie

The "Penguin" daily threads were originally conceived to emphasize that all members of the community have a place on the boards. Encouragement, motivation, a little love nip (you will love one, give it a try!) or even a little kick in the pants when needed -- it can happen here. Basically, we celebrate just getting out there and moving our tails! What is "slow"? "Slow" is a perception but one of the common benchmarks is the 10:00/mi pace; but there's no firm line. In fact, there are many of us that have slipped past this, and just hope that no one notices and revokes their "igloo privileges." It can be confusing for the forum newbies, but we're not one of the teams in any of the fine games. It's a totally open group, so stop lurking, post an introduction of yourself dive in and join the fun! No application necessary! There might even be a lovely picture for Scotty (we love pics!)

Morning!  I got so lost on my run yesterday!  I planned a nice easy loop or two around Epcot, but there was a ton of construction and no sidewalks or shoulder, so I ended up running towards Downtown Disney.  I ran past that to Saratoga Springs, and it was finally getting nice when I hit my turnaround point.  So I decided to keep going for another mile, which put me in the Treetop Villages past the golf course.

So anyway, I must have gotten turned around on the golf course, because looking at the map later, when I 'turned around", I headed exactly the opposite direction from where I needed to go!  I couldn't see any landmarks any more, and I ended up in some uninhabited area with a motor pool and some warehouses.  Finally I ended up on a road, but without sidewalks.  And by then, it was getting dark.

I found a warehouse that looked more inhabited, and waited for somebody to come out, and asked him if he could call me a cab (I had money, but idiotically hadn't brought my phone).  Eventually, more people came out.  The consensus was don't call a cab, it will never come.  But they could give directions.   The consensus was also "WTF, you ran here?" Wink

There were two routes.  One was longer, and had no sidewalks, but was populated.  It would take me back to Downtown Disney, which would be 2 miles from my hotel.  The other was direct back to my hotel, and had sidewalks, but was very dark and desolate- no businesses or houses.

I took the dark route and headed out.  Actually, the directions were great.  I was about 2.3 miles from my hotel at that point.  And it was completely desolate and the trees were so tall that I couldn't see anything at all until I was like 3 blocks away.  But I made it back just in time to meet me coworkers for dinner. Glad you made it back safe Z.

        Singer who runs a smidge

Morning, Penguins!! The gig last night was lots of fun -- great audience, and they fed us first, which is always a plus.  Tonight, believe it or not, I have NOTHING!!  Will get to go home and chill with DH for a change.  Then tomorrow our chorus is singing for a celebration of life service for one of our members' stepfather who passed away -- there are Christmas carols involved, so it should be good.  Sunday my quartet is singing a gig, so no rest for the weary, except tonight!

Zelanie -- glad you made it back!!  I would be very leery of running a dark deserted route in a strange town ... be more careful, honey!!

PAD -- woo-hoo for your 6 with intervals!!  Huh, about the Penguin retiring.  He inspired a lot of us!

When it's all said and done, no one remembers how far we have run.  The only thing that matters is how we have loved.

            Morning!  4-5 miles tonight.

Z, consider it an adventure.  Without sidewalks because there are not any over there.

Z, that sounds kinda scary and fun at the same time!

I might do tabata again today. I'm on some weird exercise kick. Wink

                Hi Pens.

I had a nice 7 mile tempo run last night. Let's hope I can keep it together for the next five months during marathon training. Last night was DD's XC awards banquet. She got a varsity letter and a special patch for her letterman's jacket. This year the league gave out 12 patches to the "scholar athletes" with the 12 highest GPA's. She earned a patch. She was the only one on her team to get one, boys and girls.  That's pretty cool and we are super proud of her. More importantly, she is just a nice, kind-hearted kid.

Easy miles on tap for later.  Have a good day.

Zel, your story almost gave me a panic attack. I'm glad you got back safely.

                  Pad, tough workout. Good job.

                  Hopes, enjoy your restful night.

Jack, tha t's so awesome about your DD. I know you and Mrs Jack are about to burst with pride. I'm glad they recognized her for athletic talents AND her academic achievements.

I wussed out on my run last night. Fell asleep on the couch at 7 just too tired to go. I did do my anatomy for runners strength exercises yesterday and wow am I sore today.

I ran 5.4M today on trails and ran my last 1/2 mile at almost 5k pace (somehow)

                    Good morning and happy Friday.

How many miles was your adventure run Zel?

                    Good run PAD.

                    Enjoy chillin with DH HsM.

Have a good run tonight, Docket.

                    Have a good workout, Obie.

Congrats to DD, Jack. Smart, fast, and nice !!!

Glad you got the strength training in, Traci.

We got 6 in this morning.  Perfect weather and no one on the bike path, except there was a cyclist that passed us and shouted out "on your left Ladies"   DW got a laugh out of that.  We had been running close to 11:00, but after that, it was all under 10:00.  Felt really good all the way.  It was not a low HR run.  Holiday streak continues.

                    Have a great weekend !!!

                      Hi Pens,

I got my mile streak in this morning and then an upper body strength work out.

Zelanie - at first I thought, "Not such a bad place to get lost...Epcot and all". Then I started to get scared for you. Glad you are safe. I always look forward to running in new places when I travel, but DH hates it. He gets really worried about me running in unknown surroundings.

                      PAD - nice run!

HM - nights where nothing is on the calendar are such a luxury and pure heaven! Enjoy.

Glad it's Friday. Is it 4:30 yet?

Can't wait to bail out of here.  I am seriously cranky today.  Luckily my tech is leaving in about half an hour, so I can spontaneously combust without collateral damage.

When it's all said and done, no one remembers how far we have run.  The only thing that matters is how we have loved.

                        GinnyinPA

Z - it's always a bit difficult running and walking in areas you aren't familiar with.  I've occasionally had locals tell me, "You really don't want to be walking here.  Let me escort you out."  I usually feel safe running, because by the time anyone notices me, I'm gone, but there is still that potential for getting lost, especially with no mountains or tall buildings to orient you.  I'm glad you made it back safely before full dark.

PAD - I like John Bingham. Good job on the tempo run.

HopesMom - enjoy your quiet evening with DH

D - good luck on your miles this evening.

obiebyke - it's a good time of year to get on an exercise kick.  You burn off some holiday calories, and get to the gym before the January resolutionists arrive en masse.

Jack - you have good reason to be proud of your daughters.  Congratulations!  Enjoy your run later.

Traci - running fast on trails is much harder than running fast on pavement.  Good job.

Jerry - nice having decent weather for a MLR.  I hope it continues for you.

Kathleen - good job keeping the streak going.

AFM:  Cold rainy day, so I'm back to the treadmill later.  I'll probably keep it short since this streak is being a bit hard on my body. A lot more aches and random pains. Doesn't help that I'm increasing mileage at the same time.  35 mpw wasn't a problem.  40 is harder. I hope I'll get used to it soon.

                          Jill.

                          Penguin Power!

                            Afternoon all!

Got 8.9 done today and felt really good while doing so.  Yesterday I chose the "hill" route - aka the Queensboro Bridge - and it was pleasant.  Yesterday was relatively windless -- though the route was 5.5 miles, not the 5 miles I remembered it to be.

Zel - being lost is definitely scary =/

PAD - sad to hear that the penguin is retiring

DR - enjoy your short run

obie - where do you get these tabata workouts?

HsM - I love lazy days

Jack - your daughter sounds great :-)  what year is she in school?  I always got those "scholar athlete" awards though my sport in high school was swimming.

Traci - I should start those exercises.  I bought that book shortly before my massive ankle sprain and never got around to doing anything with it.  Though if they make you super sore I might delay until after this winter run streak.

Jerry - good job keeping up the streaking.  Do you always run with DW?

                            Kathleen - good job streaking!

Ginny - It is important to listen to your body.  What is more important to you this winter: increasing your mileage or streaking?

                            Upcoming Races: Run as One 4M (4/24) * Japan Run 4M (5/8) * Brooklyn Half (5/21)

                            Team TJ

Howdy penguins.  I stopped at the park before I left town for 2 quick laps.  Planned to do more but nature put a stop to that.  2 is better than -0-.

Running for TJ because he can't.
