Runner forfiets race over bib number (Read 191 times)

No more marathons

A 19 year Air Force Senior Master Sergeant is being brought up on charges after he was ordered to reveal his views on gay marriage to his lesbian commander.

I am fortunate in my current unit that there is an atmosphere of tolerance and acceptance of everyone, but I have been in units and have friends in units where that is most definitely not the case.

Do you not see how completely at odds those two statements are?  The first reveals that a homophobe is being called to task (one has to wonder if he/she was bullying), and the second says that your unit would not tolerate a homophobe.

Which one are you supporting?  And how does being called to task for one set of intolerance constitute religious intolerance?

Well, since we know that the commander is a lesbian, I should probably mention my wife of over 15 years (well legally just 3) is a believer in miracles and angels in addition to the Christian god.  I don't think it has ever occurred to either of us to try to convince the other to change.  As our life philosophies, priorities, morals, etc. are closely aligned, it's never been an issue.

I really like this ^. I wish we could all behave like these two people.

I'm confused about why someone would have to "reveal" his views on gay marriage. It's not illegal to be against gay marriage. But I think it is illegal to harass, or intimidate, other people based on their sexual orientation (or at least, it should be). Could it be why the Senior Master Sergeant was called to explain himself to a commander (lesbian or not)? It's just a guess... Otherwise, why would he be the only one who has to discuss his views? Maybe I'm not understanding the story correctly. But thank you, Susan Rachel, for your answer regarding the wearing of the #666 bib. It was a logical answer to me.

I'm actually with your wife. My wife who taught in a Catholic school for years doesn't define herself as any religion. I don't see the point of convincing anyone to change regarding religion or politics.

That's because you are not an Evangelical Christian.

And would anyone like to explain the relevance of that cartoon?

The significance of that post just hit me (yeah, little slow) - congratulations three years late.  It is a shame that it took so long for even a few areas of the country to stop this discrimination.

Ding, ding, ding.  I want to see Susan's sources for her information.  I'm not buying what she's selling.  I served in the military for 30 years and the non-believers are way, way, way outnumbered by the believers.

If I saw a lesbian santa wearing bib 666 at an air force sponsered 5k I would wish her a merry christmas even if it was hanukka and even though I'm an athiest.

                    PS. I PR'd a 5k in 2012 wearing  bib 666.  I did get some looks/comments.

                      Sure.

It's a quasi analogy to what the evangelical Christian believes they have to offer, often offered up to people who have no time or inclination to hear about such nonsense.

We've all grown so numb to "religion" that we forget about God.  (The God of the Bible, I speak of).  I don't try to thrust religion down folk's throats, but I will always take an opportunity if it presents itself, to propose that perhaps there's more to life than just the here & now.

If an eternity in a true heaven is possible, why wouldn't someone want to offer it up?  (rhetorical)

I'm running a race with 1,000+ on Thanksgiving. Chances are someone will be wearing 666. If I see this person I am definitely going to ask them 20 questions and then blast the RD for even having this # as an option.

                          Sure.

Well of course that is what I figured, I just thought it was a strange analogy, in that what is being offered is a more efficient way to kill people.

Also there is the difference between offering of a tangible known commodity vs. a "possibility". The possibility by definition cannot be known, so you are offering your belief. And people do not often change their beliefs on this type of thing.

Either way, I think evangelism is pretty much like telemarketing. Generally 99% of the people (you can dispute the figure, but it will be very high) have no interest in the product. They know it exists, if they wanted it they would go about getting it. It has nonetheless been determined that it is worth the effort for the 1% buyers. But it is still intrusive & bothersome for the 99%.

I find it ironic that any runner would complain about evangelism.  As if everyone on our Facebook newsfeed wants to hear about our running, and shoe porn.  I love running, but it's pretty trivial in my life compared to my faith.  I know, I know, it's not you.  You don't talk about your running around disinterested non-runners.  You never discuss fitness with anyone who didn't seek out that info.  I'm talking about that other runner.
