Return To Racing

The "Penguin" daily threads were originally conceived to emphasize that all members of the community have a place on the boards. Encouragement, motivation, a little love nip (you will love one, give it a try!) or even a little kick in the pants when needed -- it can happen here.

Basically, we celebrate just getting out there and moving our tails! What is "slow"? "Slow" is a perception but one of the common benchmarks is the 10:00/mi pace; but there's no firm line. In fact, there are many of us that have slipped past this, and just hope that no one notices and revokes their "igloo privileges."

It can be confusing for the forum newbies, but we're not one of the teams in any of the fine games. It's a totally open group, so stop lurking, post an introduction of yourself dive in and join the fun! No application necessary! There might even be a lovely picture for Scotty (we love pics!) ShyShyShy

              Good morning everyone!

Jerry -- sorry to hear that.  Is there a pool at your health club?  Maybe you can take this forced vacation from running and do some swimming -- so you can do a triathlon?

T-rod -- Good job on the morning miles.  Not such a good food choice for breakfast, though.  Popsicle??

Kristin -- Yeah, this week is a tough one for runners.  My in-laws in Oregon don't quite "get it" that when we get a heat wave like this, it never really cools down at night.

AFM -- 7.5 hot / humid / hilly miles last night.  I found a new asphalt path that loops along a creek for a couple of miles, conveniently located near the turn-around point of one of my routes.  Bonus -- there's a public restroom in the park.  So now when I head that direction I can either do 5 miles or 7 miles, and have a pit stop available if needed.

Last night as I finished my run I thought "Poor Damaris has to run in this crap all year long!"  And then I started thinking about which Penguins had the worst climate for running and who has the best.  So here's the Question of the Day:  Which Penguins do you think have the best / worst running climate?

I think DR is in a bad place.  And Vance has got bad winters, so maybe he''s in the worst place.  I think Zel in the PNW and Jack in SoCal have it pretty good.  As much as this week sucks, Southeastern PA isn't such a bad place overall -- probably somewhere in the middle between best and worst running climate.

              Barking Mad To Run

No running for me today.  I have to go to court to drop some paperwork off, and after that, get a haircut, I'm getting kind of 'shaggy."  Funny, I used to have real long hair during my youth, but since my military days, my hair just starts touching my ears and it drives me crazy.

Jerry, what's up with the hip?  I assume that's why you are URD-ing.   About time to go to a doctor?

It's raining where you are, Tomas?  Our rain tapered off last night, darn the luck.  However, we MAY get more rain today.  I'm not holding my breath.  Stupid weather guy.

Welcome to every-day weather in Texas, Kristin!  Way to get out in that stuff and get it done.  You are now ready to to a Texas race. Big grin

Which Penguins do you think have the best / worst running climate?

Well, Margo, worst, I would have to say is for poor Damaris, she gets that stuff all year long in Miami.  Texas is pretty bad in the summer, but at least we get a break from October to April. May it starts getting hot again for us.    Best for summer, I would guess, is whomever lives up in the Northwest area.  They probably get some unusually hot days, but I would guess their temperatures for summer are more comfortable than most places.   I sure would not want to be up there during winter though!

I like the heat, so I'll go with Miami.

Margo, I don't swim very well, so I would only do a triathalon if they substituted walking for the swimming.

Scott, my Dr. appointment is Monday.  I stopped the PT exercises for a few days when the hip wasn't improving, but I started them again today.

Jerry, keep your chin up. Are you doing some other activities to keep your cardio up?

4M on kinvaras. Low mileage day, I guess.

July 17th is Yellow Pig Day! Yellow Pig Day is a mathematician's holiday celebrating yellow pigs (is there such a thing!?!), and the number 17. It is celebrated annually since the early 1960's, primarily on college campuses, and primarily by mathematicians. On campus, Yellow Pig Cake and Yellow Pig Carols are tradition!

                        Singer who runs a smidge

Morning, Penguins!!  I was going to have quartet practice tonight, but our lead isn't going to be back from Chicago in time, so that's hosed.  Looks like I go home and do laundry tonight!!  DH had a bout of food poisoning yesterday (happy birthday to him), so hopefully tonight we can celebrate a little without the dry heaves.  Poor guy!

Jerry -- don't worry, eventually all the URD's blend into each other and you resume couch potato status!  Oh wait ...

T-rod -- now that sounds like a good run!!

kristin -- yeah, this is not a good summer to be outdoors!

Phillie -- Probably not me, I whine and complain, but it's not horrible here in VA.  Just bad enough for whining and complaining!

scotty -- Here's the standard joke in my family.  I say to my father, "You got a haircut!"  He says, "No, I got them all cut!  You wouldn't have noticed just one!"  It's funny the first time.  Not so much after 20 years or so ...

Bin -- no idea about the tights, sorry!

When it's all said and done, no one remembers how far we have run.  The only thing that matters is how we have loved.

Morning.  Busy day as I have a trial this afternoon and a dentist appointment tonight.  If I have time, I will run 4 miles; otherwise, SRD.

I see I am winning the who has the worst weather!  What do I get???

As part of the 2024 London Marathon, I am fundraising for VICTA, a charity that helps blind and visually impaired children. My mentor while in law school, Jim K (a blind attorney), has been a huge inspiration and an example of courage and perseverance. Please consider donating.

I don't know, Damaris.  According to the Weather Channel, you're 20 degrees cooler than I am right now!
