Ubiquitous Wednesday Penguins (Read 20 times)

PADRunner

The "Penguin" daily threads were originally conceived to emphasize that all members of the community have a place on the boards. Encouragement, motivation, a little love nip (you will love one, give it a try!) or even a little kick in the pants when needed -- it can happen here. Basically, we celebrate just getting out there and moving our tails! What is "slow"? "Slow" is a perception but one of the common benchmarks is the 10:00/mi pace; but there's no firm line. In fact, there are many of us that have slipped past this, and just hope that no one notices and revokes their "igloo privileges." It can be confusing for the forum newbies, but we're not one of the teams in any of the fine games. It's a totally open group, so stop lurking, post an introduction of yourself dive in and join the fun! No application necessary! There might even be a lovely picture for Scotty (we love pics!)

4 done this morning @ feels like 25. Gonna be a long winter.

25 you say? Nice 4, Pad

My plan calls for 7 tonight. It was 41 when I got up, and it was 70 yesterday.

Robert, I got the link for the spring race.

Ginny, I'll do the half for sure, maybe the full. It will depend how the Little Rock full goes.

        Jill.

        Penguin Power!

Morning all!  Today is feeling like a ran to and from yoga type of day.  Maybe I'll extend my run a tiny bit on the way there if I'm feeling good.

I'm enjoying this weird heat spell in November :-)  But I know the cold is coming.  I'm okay with cold, just no snow.

PAD - where do you live that it is so cold already?

          Upcoming Races: Run as One 4M (4/24) * Japan Run 4M (5/8) * Brooklyn Half (5/21)

              Hi pens!

Figured out my suspiciously-fast-easy-pace dilemma. On tired legs and with a lot of humidity (50F actual temp/dew point 50F), this morning's 3 was back over 10:00 mile. Moral of the story, trust the effort and ignore the numbers!

HsM - I've thought about getting a heart rate monitor, but I've also heard that you really need to have a tested max or measured HR from the end of a 5K/other all-out effort to know what HR to target for normal runs. I'm still not allowed to do hard efforts yet (and my legs are tired just from getting back to normal mileage anyway, no desire to run fast right now), might consider it in a couple months though.

Morning.  I have a run and heavy weights.  I ended up with just Pilates last night due to asthma.

It is as humid as it's allowed to be at 50 degrees! It was very foggy, like running in a cloud. S'pose the tired legs are more to blame than the fog, to be fair.

                    Singer who runs a smidge

Morning, Penguins!!  Quartet rehearsal is tonight, the first one after International competition, so it ought to be fun!  New exercises to work on, new inspiration, etc.  And I'm working on getting an appointment with a new massage therapist, so hopefully that will work out soon.  Her hours pretty much limit me to Saturdays, though, so who knows when she'll have a Saturday opening.

PAD -- sorry it's so cold so soon!!  We're still hanging onto the 60's today, then it's supposed to start to plummet tomorrow.

hog -- Good luck on your 7 tonight!!

sapf -- have fun running to and from yoga!!

Lauren -- Maffetone sets your target heart rate differently.  Docket can give you more info, if you're interested.  But it's supposedly really good for training your aerobic system, albeit frustrating at first because you have to run so slowly.

Docket -- have a good run and heavy weights, and asthma begone!!

When it's all said and done, no one remembers how far we have run.  The only thing that matters is how we have loved.

Just looked it up, interesting! Maybe I will pick up that HRM after all. This would definitely be a good time of year to run frustratingly slowly for a while - no races or goals other than more miles on the horizon for a while.

I have a HRM but I've never used it.  When I bought my Garmin, the model with the HRM was $50 cheaper than the one without it because of the sale.  I guess I'm kind of scared of what it would tell me, if that makes any sense?  Maybe that would be a good thing to bust out right now since I'm in base building mode.  If I can find it.

My 8 last night were difficult.  6 planned for tonight.  You don't have two bad runs in a row, right?

I have a HRM with the new Garmin I bought. I've used it a couple of times, but just to see the cool chart that it uploads.

Yes, but 100% of 50F is not really humid.  Or not the kind of humid that closes your lungs like dewpoints in the 70s.  50DP is the kind of humidity that makes you sweat.

Yes, all easy runs should be done at 180 - Age.  This has nothing to do with your maximum HR or anything.  I run at 141HR.  The first year I used it, I PRd 6 times.  I used it this year solely for Chicago and ran my fastest marathon since the last time I used Maffetone (my PR almost 2 years ago).
