Yasso 800s (Read 57 times)

Cyberic

The father of DD's friend just came to pick her up (his daughter) at my place. He's a marathoner, so of course we talked for 10-15 minutes. He told me his new coach told him about the Yasso 800s . Interesting concept. Anyone ever put that theory to the test?

I have never tried them but my wife has them in her 16 week marathon plan that she is currently using; 6 sets in week 4, 8 sets in week 9, and 10 sets in week 14.

I had them in my McMillan plan.  But I only did 8 of them, not 10.  I  averaged 3:14 I think and ran a 3:23 marathon.  McMillan said that Yasso time plus 5 minutes was more accurate for most people.

I shook Bart Yasso's hand once and he handed me a $100 cheque. That's all I can say on the subject.

100$ for a handshake! How much for friendly kisses on the cheeks?

And now you've got an easier way: you've got Yasso 800s. Want to run a 3:30 marathon? Then train to run a bunch of 800s in 3:30 each. Between the 800s, jog for the same number of minutes it took you to run your repeats. Training doesn't get any simpler than this, not on this planet or anywhere else in the solar system.

I just read this ^. I don't know if it applies to every goal time, but when my goal is a 3:30 finish time, McMillan recommends I run my 5k intervals around 6:50/7:00 mph (so about 3:25 for 800m). The way the intervals are done also look a lot like Pfitz does them.

LOL... I think I would have had to pay HIM for a kiss on the cheek.

Wait, what?  Using a "wildest dream" marathon number, I could easily knock out 800s at its matching digits.  (Maybe this is just evidence that I'm actually a miler who refuses to give a serious damn about the mile Big grin)

So 2:30 is your goal, you have to run 10x800m in 2:30 each (5:00 mpm). You can easily do that 10 times? Man you make me feel so inadequate. Go away.

I wish that were true. I would have loved to be a 2:30 marathoner.  It simply doesn't work that way. If you turn it around and can NOT run 10 x 800m in 3:30 each, then the likelihood of running a 3:30 marathon is very, very small. Some runners respond better to speed and intervals, recovery very quickly for the next, but have a harder time maintaining the sustained pace needed for a good marathon. Based on my PB marathon of 2:54, McMillan has 800m interval times of 2:43-2:52. Even using my 10K PB of 35:12 McMillan has the 800s at 2:34-2:42 with a projected marathon time of 2:45. One marathon I tried starting out at 2:45 (Yasso) pace. It was one of the most painful and I walked most of the last 6 miles to finish in 3:15.

Oh yeah... and when I was doing my 800m at 5k pace in 3:20-3:25, I finished in 3:27. So for me, it's like onemile and McMillan say: best to add a couple minutes there.

You walked most of the last 6 miles and finished in 3:15?  They must have been 6 very painful miles on a mental level as well... :-(

                                Sorry. Bad joke.
