Friday Penguins and the lack of a catchy title... (Read 34 times)

Smaller By The Day

The "Penguin" daily threads were originally conceived to emphasize that all members of the community have a place on the boards. Encouragement, motivation, a little love nip (you will love one, give it a try!) or even a little kick in the pants when needed -- it can happen here. Basically, we celebrate just getting out there and moving our tails! What is "slow"? "Slow" is a perception but one of the caommon benchmarks is the 10:00/mi pace; but there's no firm line. In fact, there are many of us that have slipped past this, and just hope that no one notices and revokes their "igloo privileges." It can be confusing for the forum newbies, but we're not one of the teams in any of the fine games. It's a totally open group, so stop lurking, post an introduction of yourself dive in and join the fun! No application necessary! There might even be a lovely picture for Scotty (we love pics!)

      What's up penguin peeps?

I can't believe I'm saying this, but it is supposed to be ABOVE freezing tomorrow morning.  So, I'm seriously considering running a trail 5K.  The only reason would be because it's only $20, and I could wear shorts outside.  Is that bad?  I haven't mentioned this to the wife yet.  Anyway, 10 days without tobacco, and I feel like I'm starting to turn a corner.  I've been awake for over an hour and haven't had any nicotine gum yet.  I'm hoping that next week I can start to focus on my weight again.

          Good morning flock!

Awood, I forgot to say this the other day, but great job on nixing the tobacco!  I know it can be extremely hard to quit, but you'll be glad you did. Go do the trail 5k, you'll love it, trails are the best!

Kristin, enjoy your yoga!  I've thought about trying it, but I am the most inflexible person in the world, seriously, can't even touch my toes, it's sad. lol

Had an outstanding 8.2 miler this morning in my new Virratas, love these shoes!  I'll have to get some long runs in them, but I'm pretty sure they're going to be my marathon shoe.  They feel like my A5 race flats, just with more cushioning, they're super light.

Hope everyone has a great day!!

          Barking Mad To Run

Right now it is 64 degrees in San Antonio at 7 a.m.   We are heading into the middle 70s for a high today.   Yesterday after work I went down to the San Antonio for an easy 3 miles.   Well, that's what I had planned when I started.  It turned into 4.7 miles because it was so nice outside I didn't want to stop.   64 degrees, sunshine, light wind. I wore shorts and a singlet.  Interesting run too, as the River is in the process of being cleaned, so some parts of it are drained and it was funny seeing big trucks and work equipment driving around in the river bottom.   Today is a rest day for me and tomorrow I have a 5K, my 4th race of the year.

Good luck with the trail run tomorrow if you do it, Awood.   Way to stay tobacco-free!

Happy yoga-ing, Kristin!  What kind do you do?  Gail is starting back again next month.  She does Bikram Yoga....in a 105 degree room!

Congrats on your miles, Super Dave, and glad the shoes are working for you!

            Fear is a Liar

              Good morning penguins!

Awood - good to have you back. I guess driving around in this winter mess is quite the challenge. Also , good job on quitting the chew! I like the tat - I saw the Roman numerals right away and think it creative. The pipes are cool too!

Kristin - it is good to see you being active again! Is it fun to drive those shopping carts? How fast do they go?!

Dave - I would like to try the Virattas but they don't come in a wide. I love my Kinvaras but I was told they are not making them in a wide anymore So I may have to say bye bye to Saucony. ...

As for me - I wasn't feeling it last night. I started thinking why am I even running? I've been feeling cold in general and kind of feel like I am fighting something so I have been taking a lot of zinc. Anyway I had a dentist appointment last night and wore my running clothes. It wasn't too cold - I think it was 25 - but instead of dressing how I normally would I bundled up. I kept wanting to bail but after 4 miles everything kicked in and I wanted to keep running but I knew my dear wife was waiting for me so I shut it down at 8.2!

I'm so vegetarian I don't even eat animal crackers!

D2 - Lighter shoes?  That's all you need.  You're fast enough as it is.

Scotty - You can drain a river and clean it?  That is something I'd like to see.

Gustav - The roller coaster that is running...lol  You love it, you hate it, and sometimes during the same run.  Thanks for the compliments on the tat.  I certainly didn't want a cookie cutter running tat.

                  Return To Racing

Already back from health club, waiting for DW to go to Curves.  Then a short, and probably wet street run.  Going to go see "Inside Llewyn Davis"  matinee.

Do they have yoga for runners?

                      Hey peeps!

How is Absent Mindedness for a title, as I was halfway to work when I realized I forgot my watch, water, and computer.  The latter of which I hope I did not leave on top of the car before driving off!

                        Morning!  I have 7 miles.

Awood, do it!  I am eyeing a Bacon Race in April, hoping my surgery recovery has gone well for me to do it.  And eat bacon, of course.

dave- yoga is my favorite cross training with running because it is great stretching and strengthening for body balance and very calming.

Scotty- I do vinyasa. I can't do the hot yoga! Being that hot is miserable for me. It would be like working out where Damaris lives lol

Well, the river is the San Antonio River. The Riverwalk part of it is man-made, with concrete bottoms, concrete side walls, flood gates, etc.  The water for it flows in from the San Antonio River, but a portion of the flood-gates can be closed on one side, and then opened on the other, so the water 'drains' out, so the tourist portion of the river - the Riverwalk - can be cleaned each year.  Basically, they let all the water out, resurface any potholes, etc, on the bottom, and also clean out any debris that has gotten into it.   So it's not very pretty at this time of year...and the smell is pretty darn bad too, till they get the water back in.   Here is a story on it:  http://www.nbcnews.com/id/40908767/ns/travel-destination_travel/

Really interesting what they find down there sometimes when they let the water out.  Never found a body yet, thank goodness, but have found some strange stuff.  The #1 thing they pull out of the river is restaurant silverware.  Once a wheelchair was found when the water was drained, and once a rocking chair.  They find lots of cameras that tourists accidentally drop into the river while taking photos, and lots of beads, decorations, and stuff like that from several of the boat parades that go on during the year, and people accidentally drop stuff overboard.

Morning all!Good going on your quit awood! It's tough. I went through the gum, patches, gum & patches. Finally went said f'it and quit. Coming up on 3 years now.

I've been to the river walk when it's drained. 83 I think. Not a pleasant smell down there.

Ran 5 this morning and had a strange temp change. The temp seemed to go up about 5 degrees close to the end of my run. A warm front went through. I felt the sudden drops before but never a sharp rise like that. Probably went from 50 to 55.

                              Dad on the run.

Hello everyone! Went to the gym yesterday and apparently did something wrong with one of my lifts. My neck and around both shoulders is hurting so bad it kept me up most of the night. It hurts so bad that if I lay down on my back I can't lift my head up without engaging my core and lifting my whole body up or using my hands and just pulling my head up :/. I did this once before but it was better when I woke up the next day.

Still getting the miles in but I am slightly behind my pace bunny still Sad
