I vote they charge 5$ less for those events and don't give away participation medals. The event t-shirt can be useful, at least
+1, but it means a lot to sone people, especially first timers. My friend did the same 10k as me last weekend because she really wanted her own medal.
A couple at the race today were wearing all of their medals and bibs from previous races.
Skirt Runner
Depending on where I'm going after the race I may sometimes wear it the rest of that day. I don't think I've ever worn it the next day though (at least not in public). Usually put it on the medal rack that evening.
