Bodybuilders And Running... (Read 164 times)

Better I Leave

I don't know what it is, but this group of athletes, for the most part, seem to be adamantly opposed to running. I just need to throw this out and maybe some of you will get a kick outta it.

I belong to several bodybuilding forums. Why? Because I like bodybuilding...but I also like running. I know that I will never be fast because I intend upon maintaining my strength and mass. That doesn't mean I cannot enjoy running and/or respect those of you who excel at running. I've said it before, and I'll say it again....I have never pushed myself so hard until I began running. I try to convey that to my fellow bodybuilders and they just "poo poo" it.

I suppose bodybuilders see running/cardio work as a means to an end. When they're "cutting"...They increase their cardio to lose bodyfat, but other than that most of them consider running as a "waste of calories". I suppose one will find "elitist" attitudes in any sport, but I have to say, after being a member of the bodybuilding community for so long, and knowing how seriously they take diet/nutrition (in many respects I have to say they are the strictest of any sport), I'm somewhat surprised that they don't/can't appreciate the benefits of running. Many of them believe that if one "runs", one becomes "emaciated". I can attest that if one's diet is right, and it one performs a strict weightlifting regimen in conjunction with running, one does not become emaciated. I probably will never see a marathon or an ultra, but ya know? I like to run...because "I like it."...What else needs to be said, right?

    Their loss I suppose.

It's not just the bodybuilding community. I think that some people have a tendency to completely obsess with a sport and to only self-identify with that one sport.  Maybe it is a side effect of the endorphins that keep you coming back for more - I have seen the same disdainful attitude towards running from cyclists.  I don't know if you would call it elitist or purist, but the implication is always that if you are "fooling around" with running, then you just aren't really committed to "(insert other sport here)."

I include some runners in this category - some cannot imagine doing things like cycling or bodybuilding (unless you really aren't committed to running!)Wink

        Old , Ugly and slow

Bob Hoffman , Bill Starr  and John Mccallun  used to promote running.  Back in the 60's and 70's there were

lifters and bodybuilders who ran. Now they act like running a few miles will make you a stick.

I like doing both. I will always be a slow because of my weight but enjoy doing both.

Now, I don't run very long distances yet or high weekly mileage.... But I'm living proof running does NOT in fact make everyone look like an emaciated stick!!!

Same here. I'm actually 15 lbs lighter "post injury" since I haven't been able to lift as of October of last year. I intend on "gaining" (yes...gaining) back at least 10 lbs of lean body mass. I'm very close to attaining a sub 2 hour HM, but I doubt I'll ever see a 1.5 hour HM. I'll be happy with a sub 2 though. Smile

And yes...Like yourself, I do so love both sports.

              Old , Ugly and slow

When I was young and skinny( 150 pounds) i ran some decent times.

I would not want to lose all my muscle to be a little faster.

I enjoy being stronger than the average 52 year old.

I still deadlift heavy and my back is good.

I run for health and  to lose some fat.

I dabbled in bodybuilding last winter. I did pretty well and had amassed quite a bit of equipment even. Then I broke 2 toes on a rocking chair and couldn't do any leg stuff that required standing with feet planted for 4 weeks. During that time, I realized repeatedly counting to 15 while lifting heavy objects just wasn't my cup of tea, so I sold everything except for the pull up bar(I still do bodyweight core stuff).

I was a member of the bodybuilding forums as well. Yes, they are very anti running for cardio. Actually, most cardio in general. I guess they feel like it burns the muscle you worked so hard to build and the calories you are burning, you could be using to build more muscle instead of using it to run. So either or, so to speak.

But yeah, "skinnyfat" and "cardiobunnies" or "vidiots", all in the same category as runners it seemed. Emaciated and clueless.

Oh well, like I said, I need to be outside and vary my workouts. I bore easily. But I liked the build it started. I got abs and arms out of it.

                  Love the Half

If what I cared about was general health, I would lift some weights, bike some, swim some, and run some.  Instead, what I care about is moving my body from Point "A" to Point "B" as quickly as possible.  Therefore, I don't do anything but run.  (I recognize that some would argue that a judicious amount of weight lifting would improve my speed.  I am skeptical of that assumption).  Regardless, if I did lift any weights, it would only be for the purpose of  helping me to run faster rather than helping me to be healthier.  I see no difference in my attitude and the attitude of the body builders.  It's just a different pursuit.

                    Short term goal: 17:59 5K

                    Mid term goal:  2:54:59 marathon

Long term goal: To say I've been a runner half my life.  (I started running at age 45).

I think most body builders would be better lifters and have better bodies and be healthier if they ran 15-25 mpw.

I totally agree....they don't seem to want to listen. I don't get it either. Truth be told, I have never seen a group more dedicated to eating "clean" than bodybuilders. They had diet down to a science before science even knew what things like fructose could do, ya know?

Yet get'em on a treadmill let alone a track or trail? Not gonna happen. Go figure.

I look at it as a "whole body" thing. For example, tonight I did heavy squats, hopped on the TM and walked 1 mile at a 15:00 pace, hopped off, lunges, then 3 miles, hopped off and finished with deadlifts.

                          Good workout tonight.

I'll post a few tomorrow. My iPad likes to keep secrets and pics to itself.

Agree about the "eating clean", good lord, it boarders on obsession in some cases. EDs seem sortof commonplace in that community.

I want to build some muscle and I was looking at Jamie Eason's Live Fit trainer. However, it's NO cardio for the first 4 weeks. Sorry but I've got a lot of long races to run this summer. I'll just add more lifting to my regimen and hope I can add some functional strength plus look a little hotter too.

                              2013 races:

I'm on the "Dave Just Does It" program. There's no need to sacrifice running for the sake of gaining lean body mass. I've got 5 HMs scheduled for this year not including the 10Ks I'll be running. I'm 180lbs right now and by August I will be back to 190lbs at the very least. I've got 3 HMs under my belt and each one has been better than the previous.
