I think the key for me was controlling swelling immediately after the run, either by icing or wearing calf sleeves. I also did a stretching routine, which provided long term benefits, I'm sure, but in the short term icing was the biggest help with limiting the pain. The calf sleeves were for when I couldn't ice, like driving home from a race, which is a particularly bad position to be in when calf swelling is your problem.
