Hawaii's top runners vs world elites: an interesting approach to a race (Read 80 times)

My half marathon coming up in Hawaii, the Hapalua, has a very interesting approach to the elite competition. It is called "The Chase." The top runners in Hawaii start BEFORE the top runners in the world with various "handicap" times, starting between 21 minutes and 4.5 minutes early depending on their abilities. Then the world elite runners start with the gun and try to catch up to and pass the Hawaiian runners. The first person to cross the finish line wins first place, regardless of if the person started 21 minutes early or at the gun. Has anyone ever heard of a race doing this before? What do you think about it? Here is the website's explanation:

The Twin Cities 10 mile (a prelude to the marathon the same morning) has had a similar thing except it was just for the elite men and women. The women got a head start and there was extra bonus money if they held off the men and vice versa if the men caught them. Interesting concept and makes for another "race within a race".

Forget the race, you are going to Hawaii?  I want.  lol

I have friends who recently moved out there who assure me there is no way in hell they will move back to Michigan!

It was on my immediate to do list a few years back but has since dropped a notch or two.  I do hope to make it someday it is just not as high a priority now as it once was.

Kind of both. Been to Maui but this time going to Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island but not Maui so I'm not repeating anywhere I've been.
