Marathon training (Read 128 times)

I preferred reading over math as a yute.  Looking at that equation, not much has changed in my thinking lol!

My wife teaches HS Math and just looking at the homework she assigns gives me a popsicle headache let alone her exams.

I just never got it, never wanted to get it and like the metric system, probably couldn't get it unless my life depended on it.  And even then just enough to get by.

      Pathetic.

I say if you don't want to do speedwork, then don't do it.  Your goal is to finish, and the marathon is all about endurance, so you can just focus on that and have a very successful first marathon.  Then if you want to do it again and want to go faster, you can work on that.

I don't think you have to struggle if you put in the mileage and prepare yourself.  50mpw allowed me to run 26.25 miles on a long run without killing myself, and that was with absolutely zero speedwork, nothing but lots of easy miles.  Run as often as you can, 6-7 days a week if possible, and work on increasing the distance of your daily runs as well as your long run.  You need the time on your feet of the long run, but I think the endurance that you build with increased frequency helps a lot too.

Thanks, dude! I still love that you randomly ran a marathon last year. Right now thanks to a streak group Damaris invited me to, I've been running 7 days a week (the minimum is 2 miles running or walking, but running is faster) and I've had just one non-run day in the past month or so. I typically run my MLR, my long run, some 5-6's, and a couple 3-4's in a single week with no ill effects so far. I'll work on bumping up the shorter runs (right now the 3-4 milers are a matter of convenience since I can run them on my lunch break, but once it's light at 5am I'm planning on running more before work).

I am getting better about speedwork. It still intimidates me, but I've done it more regularly lately than I have in awhile. Plus, I always feel badass when I'm done.

The Metric System I can work with. Algebra 2 and all that other stuff I'm clueless with. I had to learn the Pythagoreum Theorem to take my GMATS (for MBA) years ago and quickly forgot it after the exam.

Ami, I looked at Hanson's plans and I know I wouldn't be confident running just 16 miles as my longest run. 10 miles "in unknown territory" so to speak would be almost 2 more hours... and the IDEA of their training makes sense, but I don't think it would be viable for me. I would really need at least one 22-miler so that when race day came, at 22 miles I would know that even though I'm now in unknown territory, I still have less than an hour to go. Does that make sense? It's all psychological, I know.

you can alter plans. They fired the "plan police" awhile back, so you should be safe. Cool Seriously though, if this plans speaks to you, just add some 20-22 milers in where it makes the most sense. Before taper obviously.

Good luck with it. Like LRB said, its all about confidence in the plan.

You think gas is a real bargain when you see $1, until you realize it's in liters which equals however the hell much to gallons.

We used to laugh at you Americans and your archaic system. Who wants to mutiply when all we have to do is move the decimal. It gave us more time to work on our plans to take over the US, oops, I mean our french.

A good friend of mine from overseas put it like this; the metric system is so simple that an illiterate could do it with his eyes closed!

The problem I think (at least for me) was when they were making the push to go to the metric system in the 70's, we were given a choice.  So most of us chose what we knew.

They should have just dropped the American standard and we wouldn't even be discussing this today.

Stayed at Casino Windsor for the weekend once.  Went to get gas and gave the attendant like a fifty spot.  Dude I swear, I barely got a quarter tank of gas out of the deal!

I love the restaurants and nightlife over there, but they can keep that crazy ass gas system they got!

I remember the first time we drove to Windsor. We were impressed by the skyline until we realized that we were seeing Detroit in the distance.

Sure we have a complicated system of weights & measures, and no we are not the only ones left using that system - the burgeoning economic powerhouses Myanmar & Liberia also do. But the complex conversions help build our math skills compared to other countries, as shown here:

                              Suck on that, Portugal!

Belize also uses the US system for the most part.

I'm an engineering professor and I feel bad for the foreign students studying here in the US who have to sit there and learn gallons and feet and inches.  At the same time, we do some of what we do in metric and scientific papers only accept SI units, so we have to be bilingual.

I'm teaching in Vietnam this summer and will do everything in metric there.
