Sad  50% of the people in this game just became dead weight, myself included.

Yeah, that was my concern too. Those not making the team average are detriments.

I am afraid it may drive them away if they feel they are a drag.

I don't know how it could be more fair though, aside from reshuffling the teams to make them even.

Maybe drop the highest and lowest mileage to bring the team counts to an equal number.

        ie:

20 members in MRT  vs. 14 members in Hillkillers

6 players would not be counted from MRT , the 3 top and 3 lowest get dropped.

Of course that seems overly complex for a game for fun.

At this point, without the team average scoring, there was really no way for a team with 13 members to compete with a team that has 21 or 22 members. (Thank you RWOL for your board-splitting spam.  We lost a lot of players in the shuffle between boards.)  With the new system, I don't see any particular team running away with the game on a regular basis.  Every team has a shot at a good week and a win, regardless of the number of team members.  The standings have potential for shake up every week.

Personally, I would like to see teams encourage all members to stay and contribute as many miles as they are able, whether it helps the team average or not.  (IR is an option for those who are unable to run due to injury or other extenuating circumstances.) The game is for fun and motivation.  There are no prizes or penalties.  There is no dead weight as long as members are doing their best.
