So I know we all have vices and I'm no exception.  I eat good, healthy food every day but also like all my other bad-for-you stuff.   Some are questionable, but I think it's easy to say that there's no denying soda of any kind (unless you're talking mineral/seltzer water) is just not good for you.......at all. Surprised

Nevertheless, I even recall Jillian Michaels once saying locally on Los Angeles radio here, "Don't take my soda way.  It's the only thing I have left!  Let me at least have that, please!" Cool

So after hearing a news story today about some 25yr old kid in Australia..... http://now.msn.com/william-kennewell-25-has-dentures-after-soda-addiction .....who drank 21 cans of soda per day, resulting in dentures, etc. etc.  I started looking up the article online and came upon the "diet soda" article.

Is MickeyD even over here on RA?  (Diet Pepsi or death?) Big grin

I choose to see it as "pickling myself" from the inside out.

I drink a 6 pack a day of diet soda, I also drink 64 oz of water a day. I am well hydrated(or well dehydrated, depending on how you look at it).

Something I can't shake. My mom and grandma were constantly yo to dieting. Whatever diet they were on(and bought groceries for), us kids were too. Slim fast shakes, Mr Snackwells green boxes, Weight Watchers, Special K, Grapefruit, All you can eat veggie soup, whatever.

But what always did translate and constant was YOU DON'T DRINK YOUR CALORIES!

Amen.  Except for my red wine.

But, when I was actively cutting back and tracking my calories 4 years old to lose the weight,  I also  stopped drinking my daily diet coke, even though it wasn't adding to my calorie count.  I knew it was bad for me, and even calorie free, it was time to stop.

I do still love my Fresca though, which has the artificial sweeteners, and is just as bad.

After reading this article, my Fresca may also have to go.

No, just you have to go.  The soda will take care of it for you.  Big grin

Actually, I'm pretty sure Brad and MickeyD both have said you can pry diet pepsi from their cold dead hands.  But you probably won't have to pry if you get there before rigor mortis sets in.

          Cool

Dunno if I can give it up altogether.  It's my death if I don't stop but those around me might die if I do.

Hmmm........a real pickle, I tell ya.

Yeah, I suck down maybe 3 liters of Diet Pepsi per day.  It's my pre-run hydration strategy and my post-run recovery drink.  I chain smoked for 30 years so I've done worse.

            Short term goal: 17:59 5K

            Mid term goal:  2:54:59 marathon

Long term goal: To say I've been a runner half my life.  (I started running at age 45).

WURD....Something about prying that glass of Pinot Noir from my cold, dead hands comes to mind. **grin**

              Better I Leave

Seriously though, for the past 3 years I can say the only fluids that I drinks are...

                1. Water

                2. Unsweetened Green or White Tea

                3. Coffee

                4. Nonfat Milk

                5. Red Wine

That's pretty much it. I grew up in a family that drank copious amounts of Coca-Cola and Pepsi. My mother was the coke drinker and is now dying in a nursing facility from diabetes. My father, whose Saturday morning routine consisted of a breakfast of 2 liters of Pepsi and a box of Hostess Ho-hos has lost all his teeth and is in poor health.

I have a daily diet soda habit. It is my first drink in the morning, and have been hearing about it at work for years. But when I head to the fridge there, I'm walking by the smoking herds so will take my bad habit over theirs.

I don't drink diet soda. But if I were told that it'd make me as fast as LTH and Mickeyd, hell yes, I'd drink it in a flash. Big grin But I don't think it works like that, unfortunately. :-(

                        Sooner or later??

                        Wink

Actually, just read on the side of my Coke Zero can "potassium benzoate" which is shown in media-type articles as "carcinogenic" as it supposedly can turn into benzene.  (I'm not seeing that in lots of places though).  And there again, I note that there are quite a few articles stating that potassium benzoate is in tons of things and still considered "safe" by the FDA here in the U.S. as well as other places such as Canada and the UK, though the UK has banned it from children's consumables.

Things that make you go hmmmmmmm.......

I drink the occasional soda.  Diet soda tastes like shit, so I would rather have the good stuff.  The key to EVERYTHING is moderation.  Except running Smile
