Treadmill running as % of annual mileage (Read 269 times)

RunJasonRun

I'll see your treadmill running mileage and raise you a treadmill power-walk mileage.

One of the most beneficial parts of my ultramarathon training is an extremely fast-paced power-walk on the treadmill at a 10% incline at anaerobic heart rate zone for one hour.  I use the first five minutes to work my way up to anaerobic heart rate quickly, so the pace during the first five minutes is usually exhausting and strenuous.  Once at the desired heart rate, I lower the speed over the hour as needed to maintain the heart rate at a constant high level.  Yesterday, I power-walked 4.55 miles in one hour on the 10% incline.

This workout does wonders for my ability to run up hills during weekend long runs on pavement, and it also works wonders when it comes to power-walking up steep hills during ultramarathons.  In fact, my biggest strength during ultras is my ability to pass people on the hill climbs.

I count these 10% incline treadmill power-walks as running exercises on the training log here on RunningAhead.  These workouts, in truth, are more difficult than the running, and they help to make me a better runner.  The level of exertion is greater, but my legs have a break from the impact workout on most weekdays.

I believe that I've run 5 treadmill miles out of approximately 1700 this year.

I run 2 out of the 5 runs a week on my TM. I'd prefer to be outside, but this works for me with my work hours.

I'm guessing around 30 miles out of the 1350 I've run this year, so that's about 2%.  Most of those runs are warm ups/cool downs for personal training session.  I think I've stayed on there more than 4 miles 3 times, with my longest run being 6 miles.  I'm lucky enough to live in a very moderate climate though, so I don't have to deal with extremes of heat/cold, just have to be OK with rain in the winter.

Very cool - since I logged all my runs on the treadmill as "treadmill" for the course, I was able to sort out my treadmill miles in my log here.  I have run 1,959 miles out of 44,141 total miles on the treadmill.  (Those are obviously lifetime totals)

A couple of years ago, I spent over a week manually logging all my runs over here at RA from my written journals.  So I have every run logged in my RA log - and that total is 14 years worth of running.

25% or so.  As I said in the other thread, I estimate about 500 on the machine and 1600 outdoors this year.

Yikes, since I started posting on Daily Mile (just since 11/6), 44% of my miles have been treadmill miles.

Now a big factor is that it's dark early, I've been getting home late, and my family prefers that I don't run outside by myself late at night.  And I'm a wimp about the cold.  So I need daylight or company to run outside, and both can be a bit trickier to come by in November.

I had never been on a treadmill before until last April when I was on holiday in China. It was hot and humid outside so I gave it a try. I was worried there'd be others around to laugh when I fell off, but luckily there was no one around, and I didn't fall off either.

                            Big grin

It was about 3 miles. I can't say I'd be in any rush to repeat the experience. I'm blessed with year-round mild temps and plenty of good routes.

                              Just a guess ...

Maybe 750-1000 out of 2000+ per year. I tend to do longer runs outside, but I get in a lot of 5-7 milers at the gym during my lunch break.

In the winter I head for the indoor track if I have to to avoid the ice in my neighborhood.  Longest run on a 200m track is 12 miles, longest run at the Y with a 15 lap/mile track is 18 miles.  Oddly I prefer the 200m track over the 400m track.
