loyalty to RW (Read 277 times)

RSX

Loyalty to a site that has abused you, cheated you, ruined your life, ruined your country, stolen money from your children's piggy bank and inappropriately fondled your wife on a crowded train?

Ok just channeling a well known poster here.  Basically I agree with whatever anyone has said here.

That's funny. I look at both places, but check here more often. The main forums here outside of our community aren't that interesting to me. RW has a Boston one that is interesting this time of year. I don't feel the need to pick 1 place or the other.

    Singer who runs a smidge

Are we really talking about this again?  Dead

When it's all said and done, no one remembers how far we have run.  The only thing that matters is how we have loved.

Stay classy, and good to see you still feel the need to poke me.

Call it "channeling" or whatever you want.  It's also called "passive aggressive."

Yall have fun.  It's the internet.  Post at both; is ok.

Dude do you have an app that text alerts you every time "rw" appears in a post?

          Are we there, yet?

SRL - good to see you're posting again.

I never completely left the old RWOL because of the Miles Game with some team members not making the switch over here. I was also a small part of the test group for the new version. Since the conversion I have been spending more time there but it's not the same. Many of the old-timers have not returned and there are a lot of newcomers. I don't think it will ever be quite the same for me. I will have a different niche or roll there with different relationships. How those develop will at least partially determine how much time I spend there, but I've grown accustomed to this place, so I forsee this remaining my main forum home.

             2024 Races:

                  03/09 - Livingston Oval Ultra 6-Hour, 22.88 miles

                  05/11 - D3 50K
                  05/25 - What the Duck 12-Hour

                  06/17 - 6 Days in the Dome 12-Hour.

I came to RA during the CoolRunning meltdown, but I've also posted on RW for a number of years. I started on usenet, and still regard that as my base (granted, not very active these days, but that's where my history is).

I use sites based on quality information, not total posts, and will move as needed. (I've never really forgiven RW for splitting Ultra and Trail forum.) RA's main forums and some of their groups have a lot more information per post than RW. Still noise, but it's not as noisy as RW. RA has Nobby, and he's a wealth of useful information.

Most of my FB friends are real-life friends from local running and the trail community, with a few mtn bikers cuz they use trails also. That's another source of running and trail information, none of which I'd find on any of these online running websites.

For people learning to run, I'd send them to Running 101 on RA because of the potential information they'd get.

                Great responses.

Beth and Damaris captured my feelings exactly.

                Buelligan captured my confusion.

happylily: Nostalgia, yes. Aaah... I'd like to see your long answer.

Oh, and if you think I'm beating a dead horse, sorry. I just recently had a tragedy at my house and am thinking of anything to take my tiny, little mind off of it.

I am not a big fan of all the splintering because there are people who I would like to keep in touch with that I lose whenever the group splinters again. I can't keep up with all the different groups on RWOL, RA, and Facebook. I do 95% on Facebook now. I am not loyal to any site. I am loyal to the people who provide a mutual support group.

I like RA because of the training log and calendar. I also like the support I get from the group to which I belong.

Sorry about that Fla. I hope you are doing OK emotionally whatever it was that happened.

Thanks, honey. As they say; time heals all wounds. I just wish it would hurry.

As part of the 2024 London Marathon, I am fundraising for VICTA, a charity that helps blind and visually impaired children. My mentor while in law school, Jim K (a blind attorney), has been a huge inspiration and an example of courage and perseverance. Please consider donating.

flarunner, my long answer regarding nostalgia is about those of us who were on RW for 4-5 years, sometimes much longer than that. Many of us became runners through the BF, among one core group of beginners and with the help of some of the old pros there. We were like what felt like a family for many years. We would discuss things much more openly than here, and no one ever told us that it was inappropriate, attention whoring or boring because unrelated to running. The base of forumites was large enough that the topics would keep everyone happy. I learned a lot of personal stuff about the people there at the time and the bonds felt real to me. I shared a lot as well and received much support when I needed it most. Some hot topics would appear once in a while, such as politics, religion and Ryan Hall.Big grin I loved those! We'd fight, I'd learn a few things, then someone would show up with cookies and pies and all would be good again. You only know you have real friends when you can fight and argue with them and end up sharing cookies with them in the end. You know what I mean? It's like a relationship. Good relationships have to have the few occasional fights to experience the make up sex. And who doesn't like make up sex? (sorry, I couldn't resist Big grin)

Anyway, it's the past, and like George said, for some of us, it will never be the same again. So RW has lost some of its appeal.

I am among those but I don't have nostalgia for the place but rather for the people we have lost.  It will never be the way it was then.  I actually go there now and I don't even recognize it (except those two threads I frequent and post every day in the training forums).  The relationship, I think, was with the people, not with the BF.
