Bjørnmannen
Today was my first run of the new year. On my run today, I noticed something different about the other runners out in my neighborhood. Usually, I give a polite wave to fellow runners that I pass and everyone except maybe one or two wave back. Today, NOBODY reciprocated. Quite strange. Made me wonder if everyone out today was a resolution runner... or perhaps everyone assumed I was and decided to ignore me? Didn't bother me at all but I thought it was interesting. Has anyone else noticed this?

Nobody has been on the trail when I have run since the first. Should be interesting on Saturday maybe, my first run in sunlight.
Skirt Runner
I live in New York City. I've long given up initiating the hello to fellow runners in the park. No one ever says hi back, ever, not in August not in November not in January. But if someone says hi on a rare occasion I gladly reciprocate when I get over the shock

Are we there, yet?
You see other runners when you're out?

Perhaps it was the black bean shell covering your toof?
This. I would totally never wave hello to a bear. This is probably your issue.
Upcoming:
July 27 - San Francisco marathon
Perhaps we have found a reason for why bears are grumpy.
WAVE DAMNIT!
I usually give other runners a little wave, most of the time they wave back but not always. I might wave to a bear, but I don't think I'd stick around to see if he waved back.
My thoughts exactly. I don't see anybody either. If I do, and I wave, I really don't care if they respond.

As part of the 2024 London Marathon, I am fundraising for VICTA, a charity that helps blind and visually impaired children. My mentor while in law school, Jim K (a blind attorney), has been a huge inspiration and an example of courage and perseverance. Please consider donating.

I'm not concerned with bears - its the geese I have to look out for!
I'm so vegetarian I don't even eat animal crackers!

I always wave at people. The wave return rate depends on who I am waving to:
Old folks out for a walk: Always smile and wave back.
Moms pushing strollers: Always wave back and say hi (I think this is the friendliest group).
Teen hipsters on skateboards and fixed gear bicycles: Never wave back.
Adults riding Walmart bikes and not wearing helmets: 50/50.
"Cyclists": Rarely wave back, but sometimes offer a head nod.
Fellow runners: Wave back more often than not but not as often as I'd like, and sometimes won't even make eye contact.
People walking dogs: Almost always offer a greetng of some kind.
Overall, I'd put the wave return rate at about 59%.

Mmmmm...beer
This has been my experience too, with a noticeable exception. I do most of my long runs on a 8.3 mile stretch of old highway that has been turned into a biking/running park. I usually do the full out and back for 16 miles, and I have yet to see another runner out past the five mile mark. I've noticed that while I'm out that far, the cyclists become much more friendly, I've even gotten thumbs up and audible "way to go" comments. I can only guess it's because they don't see a lot of runners at that end of the road.
There's only a few people I typically see at 5am, and we all wave, because we see each other almost everyday.

Most people wave.
For some reason, men are more likely to wave back than women.
My favorite, an old couple and their little granddaughter, who asked me how many miles? (I was at 8) and stepped off the path, cheering and high fiving me as I ran past.
Least favorite... the group of teenage boys who threw a cup of soda at me from their car.
