Is Your Garmin Waterproof? (Read 292 times)

I posted this in the gear section but haven't seen any responses, so I thought my family here could help. I went for a run today in the rain, and my Garmin 205 is not waterproof. I put a sandwich bag over it, but was wondering if this would cause more harm by trapping in moisture. How do you protect yours? What are your thoughts?

Oh, and DW thought I was stupid, ha, she just doesn't understand!

My 610 is rated IPX7, which means it can withstand submersion for 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter. So rain or shower is fine, swimming is not(too vigorous even if I kept it within time & depth limits). I had mine for nearly a year and I have worn it in all weather conditions without issue. Do you know what yours is rated? I think most non-swimming capable Garmin watches are ipx 7.

oh, I just googled your watch and it is indeed rated ipx7. So leave the baggies for sandwiches!

      running is bad for you

I thought they were all water resistant but the only ones truly waterproof are the 910 and swim?! I would expect a water resistant gps to withstand running in the rain.

        Muddling through

Never had any problems with mine in the rain and I've run in some heavy downpours. I think I once forgot to take it off before I showered and it was still fine. I have a 205 also.

The 310xt is also waterproof (can swim as long and far as you want, but the GPS won't work because it's underwater half the time).

I had a 305 that got some water damage a couple of years ago.  Not fun.

I have an FR10 and it is waterproof, not just water resistant.

What's up Mitch!  I haven't spoken to you in a while.  I hope all is well with you!

My 410 states that it can withstand immersion in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes, but that prolonged submersion could cause damage to the unit.

I would refer you to the owners manual for your particular unit, which can be viewed and/or downloaded on Garmin's website.

                Mmmmm...beer

Yup, FR10 is waterproof to 50 meters.  I think it's ridiculous that they're not all completely waterproof, especially with how much the higher end models cost.  Hell, my $15 Wal-Mart special is waterproof.

I've run a lot of miles in the rain with my 305's and have never had a problem.  They are definitely water resistant enough for rain running.  Your 205 is too.

Just looked at the user manual for the 205 and it carries the same IPX7 rating.

Though that being said, I have seen older 205s that will have issues with the rain as their case is no longer sealed from normal wear and tear use.

I knew I could count on you all. Thanks very much for all the input.

Mitch for what it's worth, the last time I ran in the rain I had my 210 in a sandwich bag, and I'll do it again, not worth the chance in my book LOL.

                          Bad Ass

My 910 is definitely waterproof since it's for swimming too.

The 610 is waterproof.  I once had that wetness under the screen, Mitch.  It went away after a week.  Mine was humidity and moisture from hours of running in 76 dewpoint.  Never seen something like it.

I have an old 110, I'm way cooler than a sandwich bag, on really rainy days I put a small piece of Saran Wrap around it before I put it on.

While I have never submerged my 410 in water, I've used it in some pretty heavy rains without issue.  I would never take it in water with me.
