Another diet thread (Read 180 times)

Nevrgivup

So I'm at work yesterday and one of my coworkers is talking about a diet called the 21 day shed where she has to cut out like all carbs and other food groups to lose weight. She asked another nurse to join. She goes on to say that she will be pigging out "today" meaning " today" because she starts her diet tomorrow. So what does she do today? You guessed it. She stuffs her face with junk. It was planned that she would be pigging out and every time I saw her, she was eating.  I just don't get this diet thing when it clearly needs to be a lifestyle change. The sad part about it, is that you can educate them until you are blue in the face and they will still look for the quickest fix. Very sad.

What is sad is that we are talking about nurses, here... Shouldn't they know better?

They call themselves emotional eaters. I can think of a lot of things to do to relieve stress that is so much better for them.

Sounds like 3/4 of the people I know, who oddly enough, work in the medical industry. Sure, they work with eyes but they still had to go to nursing school and do regular rotations at clinics in order to keep their license current. My mom happens to be one of them.

Every 6 mos or so, there is some "magic fix" diet that comes along(currently, it is soda pop being the scourge of all life existence....I do believ there was even a thread ON RA lately about soda pop evils) that all the office girls follow that will cure all their weight issues without needing to fix anything else about their lifestyle.

Ugh. I want them to succeed but thinking one thing is the root of all evil is just stupid. You have to exercise. You have to eat right and in moderation. If I have to hear one more time about where my mom has went lately that "you really get your money's worth of food" I will scream! Does it taste good? I never hear about that, only getting mass quantities of food for $5.

Yeah, I see how that's working for you.....

I don't mean to disparage,I really don't. I was there. I lived it. I know. I just want so damn hard for her to succeed and NOT DIE EARLY but she just won't listen to reason. And god, it sucks to watch it, year after year.

The medical industry isn't entirely synonymous with healthy living.

Honestly, there is no secret but it's as hard as it is simple - eat less, exercise more.

Long term goal: To say I've been a runner half my life.  (I started running at age 45).

14 months ago I was pretty much like that. I have a degree in exercise and sports science. I am a former football  coach, former track coach, and former 365 lb chub. When people at work ask me about losing weight I try to make it as simple as possible. Some listen, most don't.

                    ^^ Thank you.

Rather than start a thread about them and mocking them, why not hand them some good information that has evidence based practice to back it up?  Weight Watchers participants actually lose more and stay leaner over the long haul than other programs.

I have found that over the years, colleagues will see how I eat and comment on "healthy" or "you exercise so much, so you can eat a burger", so I use that as a jumping off point to help them get good information.

As a future NP, you will deal with this for many many many many patients. They don't want a lecture, they want someone to help them.

of course I could also be a twit and remind you of this:

"I've talked about this with friends and I think it's funny that I'm so lady like and spit during a run or a race. If you don't like it, that is your problem. It's been caught on video."

The same could be said of others eating/dieting habits. Just sayin'.

Believe me,I did not become a nurse yesterday and I do know that education is key in terms of prevention. It still is the individuals want and need for change ultimately. It's frustrating as a healthcare provider and I came here to vent to my fitness and health minded friends. You guys are few and far between.

Wow. I come on here like once a week and I guess I'm reminded of the reason why I've taken a break from the forums. I must have struck a personal nerve. You are too kind Al.

You didn't strike a nerve with me at all, except to say that I have learned the hard way over the years that your attitude will show through on this and you may not even realize it. I find the initial thread to have a tone of "I am so much better than them because I don't diet" and I think that is a bit rude.

In my 16 years of nursing and now at the tail end of my NP degree, I see this working with patients daily. I talk daily to people about this at both clinics I work in.

It has nothing to do with me being kind (though I really am), but showing you that your words of "if they don't like it, tough" and then someone else thinking the same thing but it is somehow a point of contention for you, so much so that you started a thread to bash them about their choices.

You never mentioned that they wanted to be educated. No one likes a lecture from a nurse goody goody. Trust me on that. When it comes to dieting and body image, the LAST thing someone wants is a fit runner, health type telling them how to do it "right".

I will also add that I have yet to work with a MD or NP in this degree experience that didn't WOW me with their ability to be 100% non judgmental about all aspects of care. I look up to them and I am earnestly trying to put aside my prejudices so that I can do the same come April when I am on my own seeing patients. It is not easy, but it has to be how patients are treated.
