The cowbells must be to signify the "bell lap", so aren't they all really trying to tell the runners that they're "almost there"?
I used to like the sound during a race, but ever since the 2010 Olympics the world does not need more cowbell.
Are we there, yet?

Green Day needs more cowbell. Classic performance on SNL with the payoff starting about the 1:05 mark:

MTA: watch until the end. Even if Green Day isn't your thing it's pretty funny.
Some of the responses here make me laugh.
Take Charge. Train Harder. Suck Less. No Excuses.
I prefer vuvuzelas.
Watching the Dallas/Vancouver soccer game on TV and all I can hear is this annoying thing.

I appreciate any support that people offer. Big cowbells, small cowbells, dumb signs, "Hit this sign for power!" I really don't care. I just know every little bit helps. Hell, on weekend long runs I get a little boost of adrenaline when the elitist bike riders raise their hand to me or someone says "Good morning." I'm silly like that, I guess.
