Barking Mad To Run

Did you run/walk to the event?

"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." Theodore Roosevelt

    Better I Leave

I had to look up who this guy is. Truth be told, I didn't know who Hal Higdon was either up until a few months ago. I did know who Forrest Gump was.

There's nothing inherently wrong with Gallowalking, and many people do it faster than I run. Yes, it's annoying to be near them in races sometimes. Oh, well.

I had somebody near me in one of the 5ks I did last year. I wondered what the heck she was doing! I swear I passed and got repassed by her a half a dozen times! I guess it helps a person finish a distance they might otherwise not be able to cover but it made me wonder why she shouldn't just pick an overall slower pace(like the 9mm I was running) instead of this walking for a while then sprinting past me like she was running a 7mm pace. I was confused but she must have been Gallowalking. Or doing intervals, but in a race, that would be odd.

I remember you telling that story.  Makes you wonder how much faster her finish time could be by running through it.

I ran two marathons 4 weeks apart. The first one I ran the whole time. The second one I walked about 30-60 seconds at each water stop to get some extra fluid and calories. Guess which one I did better at?

            2013 races:

            3/17 Shamrock Marathon

            4/20 North Coast 24 Hour

            7/27 Burning RIver 100M

            8/24 Baker 50M

10/5 Oil Creek (distance to be determined)

Walking thru water stops to get better nutrition & fluids is not Gallowalking, it's being smart. Experts even advise that runners(yup, runners!) do this. Gallowalking is like intervals. Intentional periods of walking followed by running, repeat at certain distances or time increments.

Jeff Galloway is like a god in my town.  Each year he spends a week here hosting all sorts of events & talks, and he runs participates in our local marathon in the summer.  There is a large gallowalking club here that meets weekly, & they sometimes even wear matching outfits & stretch in unison on the walking segments of their long run/walks.  I also notice that they tend to over-dress & carry more water & gels than some ultra runners do.  It makes me laugh, but whatever.

I do agree that he has gotten a lot of people to get active & to have the confidence that they can be active and participate in events that otherwise would have intimidated them back to their couches & potato chips.  That is a very positive thing.

His method is not for me.  However, his music video will most certainly be up for an MTV award.

Once again, I'll believe it's faster when I see Olympic caliber athletes doing it.  Hell, I'm not anywhere near that fast and I never, ever see people walking unless they have blown up.

                  Short term goal: 17:59 5K

                  Mid term goal:  2:54:59 marathon

Long term goal: To say I've been a runner half my life.  (I started running at age 45).

Once again, it's faster for some people. Not all. Obvs.

Yes.  It is faster for people who are inadequately trained for the distance.

When did I say walking it was faster???

I said the experts say it is smart and recommend it to us non elites, but walking thru water/fuel stations isn't Gallowalking, which was my point.

But I think you were missing the point of my post, which was differentiating between the Gallowalking programs vs fuel station walks to adequately hydrate. I never said it was faster, just that I have read it is a smart strategy to fuel properly for noobs who will likely be out there for many hours. You said "faster", not me.
