As for me, that is a hell no. But of course I don't travel by plane or boat (yet) so my opinion really doesn't matter lol.

I don't think I can even run the Beijing Marathon without having huge issues with my lungs.

That's probably true, even in their normal pollutant conditions... it would definitely be awful for you.

        From the Internet.

Oh hell naw. Honestly I'd probably never go there, period, unless the air pollution thing is brought under control. IIRC the first case of lung cancer directly linked to air pollution was diagnosed within the last year - I'd be about as willing to race in a cloud of secondhand cigarette smoke.

Not a marathon, since I can't do distance running anymore.  But I have run there; however, it was more than 30 years ago, during my military days.  And in those days we 'Yankees" had to have an 'official escort" (that means we were 'guarded", lol) go with us.  Even so, I got to run a part of The Great Wall - a very short part, about 5K distance - and that was pretty cool.

Thirty years ago probably wasn't that bad lol.

+1. With a Chinese family name, I'd be too afraid that they would deem me to be a resident and send me off to some small village to become a rice farmer.

Well, I did live in China. I've been back for over 6 years now and did not live in Beijing, but the pollution was there. I ran a lot, but no races because there weren't really any near me. Would I run the Beijing Marathon? Probably not, but I would think about it. And, if I was living in Beijing, you'd have to seriously consider it, especially if you couldn' t travel to destination marathons. Think of all the Chinese people who are severely restricted in their travel, for financial but mainly political (meaning it's hard to get a passport and/or visa) reasons. They have no choice.

Thank God I live in New Zealand now, but I lived in the southwest of China for 6.5 years in total.

That must've been an experience!   I lived in Asia myself for 7 years. Home-based in the Philippines and then traveled all over the place from there to a lot of different countries in that part of the world.

I wouldn't run in that even if the trip was free, those numbers are insane.

No, I would love to though, but not in that smog. I have walked on the Great Wall once. It's amazing, but when I hear about the marathon I always remember how hard it is as it is all rock, and not that smooth either.
