People watching (we are weirdos) (Read 194 times)

happylily

    People are indeed strange.

There was a guy in the neighborhood where I grew up with some OCD about his mailbox.  When I delivered papers as a teenager, he would be out there at the crack of dawn, or in the rain, or in the evening.  He'd look in the box, carefully inspect every corner, close it back up... and then start all over.

I ran past his house a few months ago and he was STILL at it, 20 years later.  Amazing.  The next night on that same route, I saw a dead squirrel in the road right in front of his mailbox...and it was late, and the house was dark.   SO much temptation to put the squirrel in the box, but I guess I'm just not that mean.

LOL... THAT would have been really mean. :-)

People are indeed very very strange.

I worked the front counter at DMV for 5 years. Then at Social Services for 3 years.  I have seen

every variation and permutation of strange that you can possibly imagine. And sometimes it

          was very very scary!Big grin

I did enough involuntary people watching during those years. Mostly I just like to ignore people

          now!LOL

          @runjerseygirl

This is everything that my self consciousness and insecurity is made of.  It scares the hell out of me to think someone would analyze my actions in this way.  I don't mean any offense rollcast, I'm sure you mean no harm.

Same here.  I can't help it.  That being said, I do my share of people watching, too.

            Do you even run?

            Gator eye

I like watching people while the DW shops. Malls and Walmart are very entertaining.

              You may be right

I like people watching but not to the point of weirdness/stalkerish. I'm at the airport (one of my favorite people watching places) people watching right now.  As Gater eye said, people are very entertaining and I will add quite interesting.  Some people just do not care what they do in public.

Some of you folks are really that afraid of other people's judgements?

It's completely understandable, but one thing I've learned (and I haven't learned that much so anything I have learned is important) is that other people's judgements are probably the least significant factor in deciding what you should do in life.

I'm the one who waived that flag, so let me clarify.  I don't give a fuck what people think about me, rather, I fear scrutiny out of a general mistrust of other human beings.  People will screw you over and some will be mean for no apparent reason other than the spirit of meanness.  Mean people suck.  I prefer people in social situations to not pay too much attention to me, so I don't end up in anyone's crosshairs when they're doling out their meanness.

This sounds crazy now that I'm typing it lol.

Lot of good sense in that. Doesn't sound crazy at all. No one wants to get screwed over.

If it's a job you don't want to lose, or you're in a really dangerous situation where you definitely don't want to attract attention (like you find yourself in prison or a really nasty dive bar) it especially makes sense.

And in social situations, you should go the way you feel most comfortable. There's no requirement to be flamboyant or the center of attention.

On the other hand, it's probably not a bad idea to develop some immunity to some of this, because you know, any time you go beyond normal or average or mediocre, you are opening yourself up to this kind of crap. And in some cases, you need to push all that aside and just fast fire forward, regardless of the little meanies that might try to hurt you.

Very true my friend. Once we understand that the "judgement" of others is their "perception" of who we really are, comes understanding. These folks "see" us through their "filter" that they've been conditioned toward. I recently read a book that changed my life and how I interact with others titled "The Four Agreements"...a simple book of only 70 some odd pages, but very profound. Once I read this, I try to not judge. I try to understand. I try to not take things personally. And I try to speak truth...It's quite liberating. I've since gone on to read the writings of the Dalai Lama and Gandhi.

Forgive those who judge you and try to understand them.

OK...I'm done waxing philosophical....Where the hell did I set down my wine glass. **grin**

I have come to think that people we qualify as "mean" often have a reason for being like that. It could be that they were hurt before, by other "mean" people. Or they are scared for some reason and their fear comes out as aggressivity. Or they are ignorant and have not been taught any better, because of their environment growing up. In all cases, this shows a weakness in them. So I try not to be scared of these people. That does not mean that I am not prepared for them, though... The only people who are truly mean are those born without a conscience. There is not much we can do with those people... But they are in a minority. I hope.

I like people watching too, not to be mean or judgy (which I don't think you were being, OP!) but because people really are fascinating. I've never met a stranger and tend to get into in depth conversations with people in line beside me at the grocery store lol...I just really like people. It's a good thing I live down South where it's better received than if I lived elsewhere :P.

                              Bless your heart.

You all are taking this waaay to deep. People are strange (its what makes us unique). That's it folks, we are different from each other and watching from a distance reveals funny, gross, interesting, humiliating, confusing, demonstrative, an sometimes exciting observations. No judgement necessary.

gyms are always fun, watching those (not all gymn-goers) that are seemingly insecure or just trying really hard to fill a role.
