The latest craze, the ice bucket challenge (Read 98 times)

Andrea, what some societies view as criminals are not criminals in our society. Think of homosexuals in many countries in the world. What if those countries decided to test on them because they view them as less important than animals? It's a slippery slope. Psychopaths and other dangerous individuals have mental illnesses, let's not forget that.

Mike, sorry for holding a discussion here. I'll shut up.

Julie I will let it go this time

.  Testing for cures and medical research is a bit more complicated, IMO, so I do not take as strong a position as testing the stupid shit.

This. If a test on a rat will help my baby live, test the rat (or pig, bunny, etc.)

( and yes, animal testing has saved human lives)

I was teasing you because the thread went off the rails a tad. Donate or do an IBC to testing.

Some PBS staff took the challenge and picked a favorite charity to challenge. Kind of a cool spin, especially since the charity is my workplace. I'all pass on walking up to the main building after work to get soaked. I also learned today that we treat patients with ALS. I had no clue. Oops.

On another note, I am sure every employee in development offices is being told to come up with the next ice bucket challenge.

For me, this falls under the people can do whatever the hell they want category.  I mean seriously, once you start judging a persons intentions (a person you do not know mind you) where does it end?

But for shits and giggles let's just say people are donating their time and or their money to a charitable cause for selfish reasons (which is a contradiction in and of itself but stay with me) who cares?  It's their time and their money to do whatever they want to do with it.

The thing I think about is how all the other hundreds of charities must be scrambling to try to find something as good as this, I mean ALS is raking in the fuckin dough!

The bombardment of ice bucket challenges is in full effect and is the next big thing.  It is the new Weakest Link, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, American Idol, or Survivor of fund raising.  It is what reality TV was a few years ago; a game changer.

And hopefully, all of the other worthy charities will figure out a way to cash in on its popularity.

LRB is wise. It's easy to be super cynical and say it's just a bunch of people attention-whoring (which it is), but the effect is good, so why not? When it comes to charity, there's no reason to pretend people are truly selfless anyway. It's just not human nature. When we do things for charity it makes us look good and/or feel good about ourselves. That shouldn't be the ONLY reason to do charity stuff, but it's a factor whether anyone says it out loud or not. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Sure it's a big "Look how awesome I am! I'm donating to charity!" thing, but the chain reaction effect caused by challenging other people to donate as well, and the fact they are motivated to donate so they get their "look at me" moment as well, is very powerful. I say rock on.

              LRB

"Between July 29 and Aug. 25, the ALS Association has raised $79.7 million from about 1.7 million donors in its fight against Lou Gehrig’s disease, according to TIME. During that same period last year, the organization raised about $2.5 million."

                Mind boggling!

And now this; Matt Damon used toilet water for his challenge which poses the question; how long before the boys from Jackass get involved. : : uh oh : :

Hmm, how do you think this ended?

The problem with opening those floodgates is that later, our society (or a different one) might consider someone else as dangerous, be that homosexuals, women, Jews, etc. So, it is hard to give permission to a government to do something because it can be easily expanded.

Bravo.  Hence the rule of law that applies the same laws to everyone.  It's why we don't permit coerced confessions into evidence.  I have said on several occasions that, assuming there is no rule of law, I can get a confession to pretty much anything out of pretty much anyone and I won't leave a mark on them.

As part of the 2024 London Marathon, I am fundraising for VICTA, a charity that helps blind and visually impaired children. My mentor while in law school, Jim K (a blind attorney), has been a huge inspiration and an example of courage and perseverance. Please consider donating.
