Damn the Canadians (Read 94 times)

Barking Mad To Run

Congrats to the Canadians. They did a great job of shutting down the U.S. yesterday. And that includes workplace productivity here in Minnesota for the second straight day.

And they kicked butt in Curling and got the gold there too...oh yeah...those were probably the reserve Canadian hockey guys...

For basketball, though, the competition isn't matched. There aren't any other nations that develop quality players like the USA.  As such, the Olympic basketball is a joke (In these decades).  If international quality improves, then it could be good in the future, but right now, it sucks.

The problem there though is if you so much as remove a few of our top players the playing field is leveled and we lose, which is what happened when we got tossed around like a rag doll in 2004.

If you got back to sending only college players, the USA would get housed by international competition as they did in the late 80's, which was the impetus for the original Dream Team and those to follow.

So where basketball is concerned, we either send our best and wipe the floor with the world, or risk becoming an international punching bag.  The latter which proved unacceptable by the outcry resulting from the loss of the gold in 1988.

The only way it would work I guess is if all countries sent amateurs only.
