Satisfactorily Sore Sunday Penguin Dailies (Read 28 times)

obiebyke

The "Penguin" daily threads were originally conceived to emphasize that all members of the community have a place on the boards. Encouragement, motivation, a little love nip (you will love one, give it a try!) or even a little kick in the pants when needed -- it can happen here. Basically, we celebrate just getting out there and moving our tails! What is "slow"? "Slow" is a perception but one of the caommon benchmarks is the 10:00/mi pace; but there's no firm line. In fact, there are many of us that have slipped past this, and just hope that no one notices and revokes their "igloo privileges." It can be confusing for the forum newbies, but we're not one of the teams in any of the fine games. It's a totally open group, so stop lurking, post an introduction of yourself dive in and join the fun! No application necessary! There might even be a lovely picture for Scotty (we love pics!)

Am I really first on the boards this morning? Crazy!

I did my record 6 miles yesterday in a bit of wet heavy snow, and it was a slow slog. My lower legs and knees were screaming. Is that what it's like to run in wet sand? But I did it! Despite a lot of stretching and foam rolling yesterday, the backs of my knees are sore today. Guess I'll just have to enjoy my RD! Smile

      Happy Sunday, everyone!

Morning!  8 miles tonight.  It is already close to 90F here so I'm going to wait until later.  Like when the sun is gone and it's only 88F?

Off to Chatanooga for a little last minute shopping and a relaxing evening with the wife. My legs, feet, and knees are remarkably not too sore.

Hi Pens! Have a great day.

Well had DNS #1 of my injury this morning. I'm sad, because this was my friend Marilyn's first 5K and I was supposed to pace her. She worked so hard. And also, bluerun and lilac jive were there. I decided that I would sign up to volunteer once I was injured. But it snowed from 8:00am until midnight yesterday, at which point it turned into a wintry mix. It was still drizzling and 37 degrees at 5:30 when my alarm went off and I had to make the difficult decision not to volunteer either Sad. With my impaired mobility wearing this damn boot the likliehood of me slipping on snow and ice was too high, and the fact that it is open toed and it was very slushy means my foot would have been cold and wet and probably gotten frostbite. I decided I need to conserve my limited tolerance for walking for the work week and doing the things that absolutely need to get done. So I sadly emailed the RD and explained that I did not feel safe going out in the weather. Sad I feel kind of useless. Not only can I not run but I can't even hand out water to runners.

                Hi ya Obie and PAD!

Docket-- That is some seriously f**ked up weather!  Good luck getting those miles in I feel for you.

kristin-- I'm glad you didn't risk getting out in the ice and snow on that injury.  You could have very easily ended up with a whole new broken bone.  Take care of yourself.

Mitch-- congratulations on your first marathon!  Sorry about the struggle at the end.  I will be curious to find out what happened.  Glad you're not sore today.  That speaks wonders for your fitness level.

Yesterday was a long day for me, but it was nice to come home & sleep in my own bed.  I was surprised at how cool it was in Phx, in the low 60s.  Still being lazy and have not ran since last weekend.

Obiebyke - six miles in the snow is probably the equivalent of 8 miles on dry pavement, so you really did well getting out and doing your longest run ever.

Docket - that is insane weather.  No wonder you want to move.  Good luck tonight.

Mitch - have fun shopping.  I'm glad you didn't hurt today.  That is amazing.  Did you do ice baths or heat or massage after your race yesterday?

PadRunner - good job on the six this morning.

Kristin - you made the right call.  Saving your energy for necessary standing and walking is a good idea now.  How is the foot feeling?  Any improvement?

Cherie - I'm glad you made it home safely from the memorial service in Phoenix.  It's a good day to rest, and after your race last week, I'm sure your body is asking for it.  Do you have any races in the near future or can you take it easy on the training for a bit?

AFM:  Shoveling snow counts as cross-training, right?  I hurt worse than I do for any of my runs or bike sessions, so I'm counting it as such. We only got 4-5 inches, but it was a very wet snow, especially after the sun came out today and started to melt it.  It's up to 36 deg. already.  We probably could have waited another day or two and it would have gone away on its own, but we didn't want it turning to ice tonight, since we walk up and down when we take Ben on his walks.  The good part is I should be able to run on the roads sooner than I'd expected.

I know I made the right call but I'm disappointed. My friend Marilyn finished her first 5K in 42:21 though and said she has caught the racing fever! Very proud of her and glad her first 5K being in snow and slush and ice didn't deter her from keeping this up!!

Ginny my foot is ok. There's not usuly any pain unless I put pressure pressure through my heel. I have been trying never to do that. Sometimes it aches a bit when walking in the boot and last night it hurt while I was sleeping but overall its ok.

Ginny, I'm taking it easy for a while.  I thought i'd probably want to do a 50k trail, but really to be honest, I'm enjoying the break.  2014 might be a year of reducing mileage.

Shoveling snow really, really counts as cross training.  I haven't done it for a VERY long time, but I still remember it as being quite challenging.  Hope it warms up soon for y'all.

Kristin-- very cool that your friend caught the racing fever.  Once you heal up, hopefully the 2 of you can try another race.

                      on my way to badass

Obie-extra credit for wet snow.. Damaris- Your weater is unbelievable! Mitch-glad you are pain free today. Kristin- so glad your friend had a positive experience. PAD- Good for you getting out there. Cherie- glad you are home safe. Ginny- absolutely, shoveling is cross training AFM- 14" of snow. We got out and picked out a tree. 2nd RD in a row. I seem to have lost my mojo. My plan for the week was to take it easy. I have a 5k race on Saturday. As of now it looks like the weather will improve by then.

Still waiting for the perfect race picture. 5K PR-33:52 , 10K PR 1:11:16, First HM 2:42:28

                        Return To Racing

Took a RD as DW's knee hurt from the track run yesterday.  Went to the HC instead.  We will try tomorrow on the bigger banked track.

Congrats on creating another runner, Kristin.  Before you know it, she will be running a HM with you.

Had 14" on top of few inches already packed down the past week. Spent 1.5 hrs snowblowing. Then later went out to cut down a Christmas tree. Didn't run, but it was all some exercise. I ran yesterday before the snow. And have a soccer game tomorrow night. Wednesday will be an issue, as I'll be up for a run, and this snow is not going anywhere, so not sure what I'm going to do.

Just taking it easy today. Calf hurts a lot. The pain from the clot seems to come and go. Knee had its best day since I dinged it. I might try a short run tomorrow.

Hi pens! 5 miles with soaking wet feet in slush this morning, followed by cookie decorating and pizza with a couple of DD's preschool friends - lots of fun, was nice to get out of the house with her for a change Smile Super sore from the run, looking forward to my SRD tomorrow.
