Who have you met famous in the running world?? (Read 384 times)

Nevrgivup

This was at this years Boston Marathon. I was just going through pictures and found this. I have yet to read the book. What an inspiring lady who at the tender age of 80 is still completing marathons and triathlons.

I think I may have mentioned this before but Guy Morse (director of the Boston Marathon - retiring this year) is my best friend's dad. I ran with him and his family in my first race this past April. Known him since I was 5.

Does this count? I think it's pretty rad.

Jackie Areson, NCAA track champ and probably future Olympian. I actually raced against her in a mile race of only about 35 people, which was cool. Obviously, she killed me, but I did run my mile PR chasing her. Smile she was very nice.

You should post that picture of you and Dean's enormous head.

I met Shorter last year when he was a speaker at a race expo. I went to the marathon Olympic trials in Houston this year and met Meb Keflezighi and Abdi Abdirahman as we were staying in the same hotel. I met Wallace Spearmon in the USATF area. If you have the chance I highly recommend checking out the trials. Runners, runners, runners and a ton of people involved in the running world were there. It was pretty cool. Plus I PR'd at the Houston half-marathon that weekend which was nice.

I didn't meet him, but I have been in two races with Troy Aikman. He is more famous as a quarterback than a runner though.

I met Shalane Flanagan at the RW Half, and other RW people like the editor, Mark Remy, Amby Burfoot (well, he ran by me and I yelled hi), and Bart Yasso. I also saw Dean Karnazes and Matt Long called my name when I crossed the finish. I also won a bunch of signed stuff from Kathrine Switzer and Bill Rodgers, but didn't meet them.

Okay, I'm warning you, do not laugh at me...Big grin I met Cindy and Christy, the famous Canadian twin sisters who created runningskirts.com. Big grin Maybe not as inspiring as Sister Madonna Buder, but Cindy and Christy are mothers, successful business owners and they run sub-1:25 HMs. Cindy's goal for the full is a sub-3:05. Not bad for busy moms/business owners! Whenever I have a question for runningskirts, I always get one of them to assist me. They are great gals.

I have met both, but I'm not here to brag.  I'm here to go meta on you.

I've actually met Frank a number of times (he comes to my home race, the Kona Marathon, most years).  I was once sitting near him on a plane.  He was thumbing through an issue of RW (yes, really).  After he was done, he asked me if I wanted it.  Sure, I was bored too.

Inside was an article about Dean.

Who, I've also met a number of times.  During one race conversation, Frank (and other runners) came up.

                    Whoa.

I met Dean Karnazes at The North Face Endurance Challenge 50 Mile a couple of years ago.  He's a cool and modest guy in real life, and it was fun to talk for a few minutes.

I have also hung out with Jeff Galloway several times, because he still runs his program from here in Atlanta.  Jeff Galloway has always been one of my running heroes, so it's always cool to see him.

I met Karl Meltzer, a world-famous ultrarunner, at last year's Pinhoti 100.   I also met Geoff Roes very briefly at The North Face Endurance 50 Mile.  They're both awesome, inspirational, and friendly people.

I met Charlie Engle, one of the runners from the Running The Sahara movie.  Once again, he's a good guy in person, although I only met him briefly.

Nobody leaves this place without singing the blues.

BTW, most "famous runnerly people" I've met are suuuuuuuper nice in person.  Bill R, Dick Beardsley, and Frank are three that come to mind.  Dean, though he can be annoying depending on which version shows up... there's "let's talk about me" Dean and "let's talk about you" Dean.

Billy Mills was REALLY cool to meet.

                        Etc etc.

So, who have I met that did not completely dig...

Hal Higdon.  I've met him several times.  Always grumpy.

                        Mary Slaney.  Umm.  Yeah.

I wished Meb Keflezhigi luck at the Olympics while wearing a silver-sequined g-string. Beat that!

You're lucky he only called your name. Wink

Funny thing. I once wished her luck at the Olympics too.

Beardsley is a cool dude. See him a lot around MN here. One, of I'm sure many, good stories - he was the guest expo speaker at the inaugural Mankato Marathon and the next morning he was 50 yards from the finish high-fiving runners as they came in.
