Return To Racing

The "Penguin" daily threads were originally conceived to emphasize that all members of the community have a place on the boards. Encouragement, motivation, a little love nip (you will love one, give it a try!) or even a little kick in the pants when needed -- it can happen here. Basically, we celebrate just getting out there and moving our tails! What is "slow"? "Slow" is a perception but one of the common benchmarks is the 10:00/mi pace; but there's no firm line. In fact, there are many of us that have slipped past this, and just hope that no one notices and revokes their "igloo privileges." It can be confusing for the forum newbies, but we're not one of the teams in any of the fine games. It's a totally open group, so stop lurking, post an introduction of yourself dive in and join the fun! No application necessary! There might even be a lovely picture for Scotty (we love pics!)

      Barking Mad To Run

Enjoy Florida, Jerry!  Say hello to Damaris.

Today is a BRRRRRRR!!! day in San Antonio.  Ran last night after work, the temp was 78 degrees.  Woke up this morning to 43 degrees and 35 mph wind gusts and our temp will be dropping throughout the day, at the time I get off work (4 PM) it will be 38 degrees.  And we have a nice cold rain to accompany all this.

My run last night was fun an interesting.  As I have a 'city-wide' membership for the YMCA, I am in the process of exploring all the local Y's and their surrounding areas.  Last night I went to the Westside YMCA.  The Westside of San Antonio was previously a notorious 'gang' area, but has improved a lot since those years. I went out into the local neighborhoods and did a 3.6 mile loop from the Y and back again.  I was the only runner on the streets and probably the only caucasian guy within 12 miles of the place, lol.  But what the heck, I don't care,so what if I might have seemed to be 'out of place' a little,  people are people, and as long as you treat folks with dignity and respect and be polite, you usually don't have any problems. My whole military career when I was overseas in lots of places I'd often run out into ''strange territory" and go "exploring" to get to know my surrounding environment. Which sometimes led to a few 'adventures' at times , but that was okay too.  So this was no big deal for me, par for the Scottydog course.    Lots of of folks in this area have dogs so I guess the combination of me having dog biscuits and wearing my "I Beat Cancer" shirt was kind of an 'ice-breaker" for the local residents.  I treated a lot of doggies along the way, had some conversations with lots of nice folks, and even a few of the local drivers honked at me and shouted out their window "Way to go!" and "Looking good!" etc.  When I got back to the Y, the lady at the desk - who had told me to be careful out there and be aware of my surroundings - asked me how the run was and I replied "Very nice, I met some very nice people and nobody shot at me at all"  ( I was actually shot at once when I was running when I first moved to San Antonio in 1994), which made her laugh.  The West Side often gets 'bad press' from the local news (and the East Side too), but where I was running  I found it to be very nice, with lots of good folks there.  Turned out to be a very nice run, so one more 'new route' to add to my growing collection.

        Dad on the run.

Hey penguins, grabbed 4.1 miles with a friend from work on a paved trail that he has near his house. Its a very nice run and the trail is part of the rails to trails program. I had planned on 6 miles of rolling hills yesterday but I ended up with a extremely bad migraine Monday night and spent most of the night awake and throwing up so I felt pretty tired and kinda out of it Tuesday. Those 6 miles will be done today after work.

Hope everyone is having a happy hump day!

Morning!  I never did get the hang of yesterday.  Hopefully I can get a handle on today. Smile  I have a late meeting, and planning for 6-8 after that.

            Jerry- Have a wonderful trip!

Scotty- That is awesome that you are serious about going to all the Y's and that you got to meet some great people, too!

Jimmy- Hope that today is better for you!

              Hi Pens.

Work and then sandbagging. Lots of sandbagging. I will be lucky to get a six mile tempo run done.

              Wish us luck.

              Singer who runs a smidge

Morning, Penguins!!  It was snowing when I got up this morning, but I figured it wasn't going to stick much, and I have a quartet gig tonight, so I packed up my gear and headed to work.  And I was right, I didn't have any problems.  Selfishly, I would've liked another snow day, though!!

                Jerryb -- enjoy the trip!!

Scotty -- glad you had a nice run and met good folks!!

jblack -- sounds like a nice run!!  Glad the migraine is over!!

Zelanie -- my DH had the same problem with yesterday.  Which is why we had pizza from WalMart for dinner!

Jack -- hope the sandbags hold!!

When it's all said and done, no one remembers how far we have run.  The only thing that matters is how we have loved.

                Bin Running

Hi guys. Can't believe it is still snowing for you. We are having some dry spell. Not overly hit but we haven't had a decent rain for 20+ days which is unusual for a tropic country.

7 easy done. Still unable to wake up at 5am to fit in a run.

Jerry - good luck in your HM and have fun on your cruise.  Just being in the sun and warmth will be a treat after this winter.

Scotty - as a walker, I've always just wandered at will, sometimes in strange places.  Twice I've had locals escort me out of an area because "It's not safe for you to be here."  But I never actually had any problems, except with some of the crazies on the street in San Francisco.  I do remember walking in one area though where I kept the mantra going in my head, "I'm invisible.  Please don't see me."  It worked.

Jimmy - sorry about the migraine, but at least you got in 4.  Good luck with your six tonight.

Z - enjoy your run this evening.

Jack - has the rain started yet?  I hope you don't get hit too badly with mudslides.

Hopesmom - we had the same kind of snow - just a dusting, soon gone.  Enjoy your singing tonight.

AFM:  my brother is having some serious surgery on his neck that will take two days, starting this morning.  I'm very worried because his health is really bad, and 9 hours of surgery is going to be hard.  I don't know if I'll run later or just do the stationary bike.

Ginny, sorry to hear about your bro. Hope he get well soon after the surgery.

                      on my way to badass

                        Hi Penguins!

                        Jerry- enjoy the heat.

Scotty- sounds like a nice run.  Low temps + rain = misery.

                        Jimmy- Ouch

Z- have fun with the 6-8

Jack- saw the rain on the radar coming your way and started worrying about the mud.

HsM- have fun at your gig tonight.

Bin- I'd worry about a lack of rain for that long.

Ginny- Good luck to your brother, positive vibes coming his way.

AFM- Still training for my 10K. 8.5 weeks to go.  Easy today, hills Thursday and long on Saturday or Sunday.  Life has been getting in my way.  I'm getting it done but it's a struggle.  Spring's arrival would go a long way to making scheduling easier.

                        Barking Mad To Run

I am NOT looking forward to the upcoming week starting from tomorrow.  I have some pretty bad arthritis and take Celebrex for it, which helps greatly.  However, my colonoscopy is a week from tomorrow and my doc has told me I have to stop taking the Celebrex for a week before the colonoscopy.  Uggg!   I'll probably end up Frankenstein or  "zombie-walking", lol...all stiff and unbendable in places!    And I have two 5Ks to do on Saturday too, dang it.

Uggg, sorry about the migraine, Jimmy, those sound really awful.  I have a couple of friends here at work who have to deal with them.  I think I'd rather just have my arthritis than a migraine!  Your trails sound nice!  Good luck with your run today.

Yeah, Zelanie, the Y HQ should pay me for doing a review on all of them here.    There are 10 Y's in the San Antonio and they are all spread out so it takes a while.

Good luck with the sandbagging, Jack!  That counts as x-training, so log it!  Make a formula, like filling 30 sandbags = 1 mile (or more!) of running.

HsM, with the weather your area has had, your area school kids will probably be in school all summer making up for snow days!

Hope you get some rain, Bin!  That is weird where you are, no rain for you in that many days.

Wow, Ginny....so sorry about your brother.  Good thoughts, vibes, etc., for him!

It may be a struggle, StoneFence, but the important part of what you said is "I'm getting it done."  So good on ya!  Don't give up!  You can do this!  I hope you get a surprisingly earlier Spring than expected!   Where do you live that your winter keeps hanging on?

Hi, I'll bike for an hour tonight.

Jerry, send me a FB PB when you get here so we can see if we can meet.  The high today is close to 86F and the one tomorrow (of 80F) it's because it will be raining.  Looks like you're getting a high of 81F for race day, so not too bad.
