Smile You're starting early!

I ran the HM this year and am hoping to run the full in 2008. How about you?

I've done the half the last 2 years and loved it...so the full was the logical choice for my first full. I'm bummed that they are doing it a week early, since my mom has a 4 day weekend the last weekend of Oct. So my folks won't likely be able to make the trip from WI to come watch and cheer. Sad

Jeans, how far are you from GR? I'm about an hour NW in Montague.

duh. I just realized I have 2 user names registered here. I'll just use "jeans" from now on 'cause it has my updated email addy.

Anyhow, I am in GR--SE side. I grew up in New Era and went to Shelby schools, though. Have you always lived in Montague?

We moved to Montague...I think going on 8 years ago...? Lived in Spring Lake for 5 years, Holland for 2 before that. I'm originally from WI and DH (diddidit) from IL. He has a lot of family in the West MI area, though.

Mike, in the immortal words of Beavis & Butthead, "work sucks." I hope you can catch a break, soon. That's one big benefit of the Christmas holiday--it often means much-needed time off for folks.

Once again a runner
Hi, I'm one of the new posters -- a refugee from the CoolRunning site. I'm 61, live in Rochester Hills (n. of Detroit), and have been alternating between Detroit and Grand Rapids for my October HM. This past October, I set a PR for the distance with a 1:51 in GR. Detroit has become almost too big, and my wife and I really love staying at the Amway Grand and then the 10-minute walk to the Y for the pasta dinner and the race the next morning.

I ran the Detroit Marathon (full) in 1999, 2001, and 2002. I haven't done a full marathon since, but if I do I am almost certain it will be in Grand Rapids. It's just the right size to have all the amenities, but not be too crowded.

Yes, GR is really nice! Someday I may look at Detroit, but I've done the GR half 2x and really have had a great experience both times. Parking was trickier this year, though--it doubled in size since last year! I wonder what sort of cap Don plans for '08?

We definitely need to have a spot for RA members to meet up and stretch before the races.

Smile

BTW, anyone doing 5/3 Riverbank Run 25k in GR in May? There is an awesome HM near my hometown in WI that I am thinking about doiing in early May, so I don't know if I will do 5/3 this coming year or not....

Kirsten, when is the 5/3 run in May? Please don't tell me it's on 5/3 'cause that would be too slick for the marketing angle!

I would love to do it if it's later in the month, but I'm running the Indy 500 Mini-marathon on May 3. That one should be interesting. Apparently it's the largest HM in America w/35,000 runners. It's already sold out. Shocked

I'm not exactly expecting a PR for that one. I'm running it though b/c one of my running partners from work is a big NASCAR guy and we'll end up running a lap on the Indy track. Now, I couldn't care less about car racing, but I do think that will be pretty cool.

Wink Mike, 5/3 is traditionally the day before Mother's Day...which is awesome, since I run my tail off on Sat., then eat like a pig on Sunday--I feel so justified!

Hello Doug
I remember you from the coolrunning boards. Good to see you in RA.

5th 3rd is May 10th. I'll be there for my 3rd in a row, 4th overall. I love the 1/2 marathon - 25k distance, but if I'm ever going to BQ I have to keep forcing myself to train for the big one. Its a great tune up race for Bayshore, as long as you don't push too hard.

Is anyone else planning a spring marathon? I'm thinking about Martian and/or Bayshore along with the 5/3.

Someday I might consider Bayshore...I have heard it's nice. Need to get a GR under my belt to decide if I want to do any races that require a night in a hotel.

Will it hold up in '09?
Hey guys (generic non-gender type of greeting)~

Kinda cool to hang out with some more regional folks. Big grin

Cory, I'm presently training for the Glass City Marathon in Toledo, Ohio on the 13th of April. I'll be running in GR as well, I'm just not sure yet if it will be the half or the full. I'll have a better idea about which race about a week after April 13th. Big grin I don't think I will mind the marathon distance, but getting in all the miles beforehand is tough! Time is such a precious commodity.

Zoomie and Q, you should both know that you both had a tremendous influence on my "running life" in the past 6 months. Kirsten, you with your weight loss, running dedication, and race successes really inspired me. And Mike, your weight loss and your Detroit HM report really moved me and I actually printed your race report and shared it with a friend of mine on the fire department that I knew would appreciate it too. Anyway, thanks for the inspiration you two! Hopefully I can return the running mojo at some point. Wink

Jeans, Doug, and Cory ~ nice to meet you all. I look forward to getting to know you all through these boards this year. Happy training and Happy New Year everyone!

Hey everyone, my name is Dan. I'm planning on running the Grand Rapids marathon (hopefully BQ, need to knock off 25 minutes). This will be my second full marathon, I ran Chicago in '06. Does anyone know what hotels are closest to the start line?
