How many of you are planning to stay in GR the night before the race? What if we tried to book some rooms in the same hotel for all the RA folks planning to run? I'm not going to be running, but DS and I will be down there spectating and holding up an HTFU sign. I'd kind of like to not have to drive that early in the AM if I can stay downtown and eat dinner with y'all and not waste gas driving to and fro...
Thoughts?

*whispers* BTW, one of my favorite RAers from out-of-state is considering running GRM (I'll let her announce it if/when she decides to register), which is what precipitated my asking about the lodging possibility.

Heh...peer pressure...she just joined this group!
Michelle and I were thinking...what if we rented a bit cottage or several smaller ones near Lake MI. Not that mid-Oct. is really beach season, but it's beautiful that time of year and I'll bet rates would not be all that bad. Might cost more to stay in hotels closer to GR, actually.
I'd be happy to help arrange stuff for people, or at least find places and rates.

Peer pressure gets me every time!
I really like the idea of staying in a cottage, but a hotel would be fun too. I'm undecided to what I'm doing. I might fly solo, or with my husband or one of my children. Or I might drive with the whole crew. Once details are sort of figured out I'll present the idea to my husband so he can crunch numbers.

I've always thought
this place
looked cool for a larger group to rent. Their rates look pretty reasonable for off-season weekend rental, too.

That would be perfect! With the airport just 5 miles away I could fly, and my husband would be up for that. Now all we need to do is find 4 more couples (since there are 6 bedrooms).

Wife and I will be staying in GR the night before. We're dropping the kids off at my parents' in Muskegon on Saturday, then heading over. Haven't booked a room yet, but probably should get moving on it soon!

Yep, you'd have to fly into Muskegon, which would mean a layover in Detroit or Milwaukee, depending upon whether you fly NW or Midwest. At least I think both carriers are still flying into Muskegon.
It's cool flying into Muskegon. There are only 2 gates and the planes are tiny. But it's cool if you fly from Milwaukee, since you get to go over Lake MI and it's really scenic.
That Run For Wings 5k race I did last month was at the Airport...on roads near the airport.

Yeah, we definitely need to meet for dinner, my wife doesn't believe any of you people really exist. As far as where to eat, honestly, I'm probably going to be a nervous wreck so I won't care.
Just make sure they serve beer.
Really cold beer.
From a tap.
and INTO MA BELLY!!!!

I'd vote for Beltline Bar...Tex-Mex, burgers, salads...though maybe that's too heavy? Trying to think of places that serve beer, but lighter fare, too...that's tough in West MI.

I think driving would be my preference. I'll talk to my husband and see what he thinks, I'm guessing he'll stay home for this one. I would love to take the kids on a road trip and give him a weekend to himself.
With that in mind, a hotel near the race would be ideal for me.
I'm thinking of trying to convince my oldest son to start training for and doing the half marathon. Shall we place bets on what his reaction will be? I'm thinking he'll laugh and then tell me that I'm crazy...but at least it will put the thought in his head.

I'm not sure if I'll be racing or not. Lately my decision making skills have been horrible. I think I'm on over-load with stuff going on.
IF I race, I'll want something like pizza the night before.
The night of the race I'll eat anything. I love foods of all kinds. The only must have I'll state is that there must be beer!

Have you started looking to find a place? I need to get a roll on making my decision and then figuring out what I'm doing. Maybe if I see the options for hotels I'll have an easier time deciding.

I don't think this is an option with Southwest, which is where I have credit for tickets.
