How's the training going? (Read 98 times)

I'm in the middle of my second week and thought I'd check to see if anyone else is starting to crank up the training for GR.
Week One for me went pretty well. Started the week strong and had a couple of really nice runs, but by week's end I was dragging a bit. My Sunday long run was a disaster, as I didn't adequately prepare for the temp and humidity. It's been so long since we've had to worry about being TOO warm while running that I really forgot how quickly one can dehydrate in this weather.
Week two is starting off slower than I'd like, as real life is cramping my style a bit. We'll see how the rest of the week plays out though.
Anyone else? How's it going?

I just got back from Texas Q and will start my marathon training schedule on Tuesday. I did not get many runs in while I was gone but yesterday I managed a 4.5 mile run on really fresh legs. I have a chest congestion thing going on right now but hopefully it will be short llived.
I am ready to ramp things back up and feel fully rcovered from Bayshore. I learned a lot from that race and hope to do better this fall.
I have not registered for Grand Rapids yet. Does anyone know how quickly this one fills up? When do I need to make my final decision by? Who here has already committed to it?

Hey Larry, we might be running right around the same pace come marathon time. Your Bayshore time is a little quick for me, I'm guessing, but then I've yet to run a full so I don't know.
I haven't put in for it yet either, just planning on waiting until I get further into the training before sending money. I am still a little concerned that I might be biting off more than I can chew at this point. Zoom-Zoom's been running a LOT longer than me, and more consistently, and she seems like she's a little nervous too, so it's got me wondering what the hell I'm thinking about! Oh well, no guts, no glory!!!! You're in Grand Blanc, I'm in Brighton. We should try to get together for a weekend long run as we progress through to October!
John, if you're knocking out 10 milers already then I think you'll be in GREAT shape for hitting (and most likely
CRUSHING
) your HM goal time. Looks like you're running really consistently, and June is shaping up to be a high mileage month for you!
Let's keep posted on how everyone's doing. I think Cory (corland) is running this also...come on peeps!!!!

Bah, I'm only nervous because my right knee has been f'in with me for the last few weeks...just in time for the training for Milwaukee to get underway.
You're gonna do great. Just think of all of the runners here who have taken on the marathon after less than a year of running and had great experiences with it.

Q, I just peeked at your log and you have a great base. Just pick a plan and stick with it. I had all the doubts during my training for my first but if you are true to your plan it will all work out. Its all mind over matter if you have done the training there is no reason you won't do just fine in the race. Just take the plunge and commit and then it becomes something you
will
do instead of something you
might
do.
Zoom, My knee was bothering me on my Sunday run. I hope it was just a fluke and tonights run goes well. It was not really bad but a definate grinding feel after my first 3 miles. I think I will wear a knee brace for a few runs and see what happens. Hope yours is onlt a temporary thing also. Good luck

About 95% sure its a go. I hope to do some big base miles in June, July, and August. Add a few speed workouts in Sept and taper in Oct. Nothing too complicated.
I think marathonmanleto was considering the race too.
I peeked at a couple of logs. Looks like ZZ and Q have been putting in some great mileage. No worries there.

Thanks, Larry!
What's so annoying about my dumb knee is that it can feel great for 2-3 days and I think I'm out of the woods, then whammo--it's back! Yesterday I had a nice run...no pain, no patella strap. Then an hour or two afterwards the clicking, popping and dull pain started. Great. Today I did my long run with the strap and by about the halfway mark my knee was starting to hurt, again. I think I am going to finish out this week as planned, then cut way back next week--I had planned to do so, anyhow, but instead of doing ~28 miles I think I'm going to do closer to 20, just to be safe.
I'll probably take Sun.-Tues. off and substitute some miles on my bike, instead...that will kill two birds with one stone, as I will still get an aerobic workout AND I will be doing something that works my quads, so that should help the knee thing long-term.
What a pain, though. Why couldn't this crap have reared it's head LONG before marathon training?

ZZ, I didn't realize you were having patella - runners knee issues. The straps helped me a little, but
this
support really did the job. I can go out, run 10-20 without it, aggravate my knees badly, then put the brace back on the next run and be almost 100%.
MTA: The problem is I started traning in these things Jan of 2007. I still wear them for training, not races. I need to address the problem so I can get rid of these goofy tan lines. They'll get you through in a pinch though.

I have seen that--is it really better than a simple below-knee strap? I'm already getting a stupid line from that.
Last time I had runner's knee issues it seemed to resolve faster...this time is just lingering...coming and going. I want it gone for good. I really hope that taking a week very easy will help a great deal. I probably should have taken a couple of much easier weeks after my 25k, but I'm a dumbass and didn't want the 1500 mile bunny getting ahead of me.

Went out for 3 miles tonight and the knee was fine. I was wearing a knee brace though. The real test will be Sundays long run .
Corland,
That brace looks a lot more comfy than the quad to calf neoprene sleeve I wear. My legs are so short it looks like i am running with long pants on one leg
I think maybe all the car traveling I have been doing right after the marathon may have something to do with my issues. Hopefully now that I am back on a regular schedule it will straighten itself out.
Zoom ,
Notice how much I have given back to the bunny over the last 3 weeks ? Its driving me crazy so I know the feeling but I had a forced vacation and rest or I would have been chasing him too. Why are we intimidated by a cartoon anyway?

Ooh...the first time I had knee issues (a year ago) were after a long car trip, too...2 days after a 15k. We have a long car trip planned this Summer, but I may end up bailing and letting DH go down alone (he's going down to Asheville, NC to help with a JDRF benefit ride). Given that running and lots of time in the car + my current issues are likely recipe for further trouble I'm REALLY leery.
And the bunny sucks.

I'm sure results will vary, but they're nothing short of a miracle for me.
I read on the old coolrunning site that it usually shows up the first time a runner approaches the 40 mile per week mark. They said that it fades as the runner improves beyond that distance. Not for me.
MTA: I've heard it called "Movie Theater Knee" or something like that as well.

I have heard those things, too...and mine cropped up just a few weeks after my first 40 mile week--pretty suspicious.
I have a good friend who is not a runner, but can't sit through movies because she claims it hurts her knees. I used to think she was whack, but in the last year or so I believe she's dealing with stuff similar to what I am. Patella issues can strike anyone, and often for no good reason.
We're starting to rethink our Asheville trip...partly because of gas prices--and lodging would also be $$, but also because of what a car trip would likely do to my knee. I wouldn't be able to enjoy a week of driving around if I knew it likely would mean at least an additional week of knee issues--and that's around the midpoint of training...way too close to the race for comfort.
What we may do, instead, is go to Michigan's Adventure for a day (next year we are planning to do season passes). We just went last week for the first time since we had DS (7) and had a fantastic time. And it's only 15 minutes away.

Bad news folks. I just found out that on 9/1/08 I'm being moved to a different shift. That shift works Wed night through Sun night (12 hours/night) the weekend of GR. It would cost me 60 hours of vacation time to keep my sleep schedule in order and run GR. I'll probably look for something on the weekend of 10/12 or 11/1. I'll keep with the group like ZZ is though.
