Grandmas Marathon

Native Duluthians and or frequent visitors to Duluth:

Looking for suggestions on where to run.  We will be in Duluth tonight, and I plan to run a copy of times this week.  Heard about the "longest paved trail" but not sure if there are better ideas.  I would like to get away from the traffic, but have the ability to get into a nice constant pace without too many ups, downs, or irregular surfaces.

    Thanks!

    Fall Marathon - Twin Cities??

The munger trail (longest paved trail) is really nice.  The pavement starts around 72nd Ave W (behind the Willard Munger Motel) and goes for many miles.  Its pretty flat., there is a hill around 4 miles, 5 & 5.5 miles.  Otherwise it just has a slight 2% incline so when you turn around to go home its a nice gradual downhill run. Smile  My sister & BIL live on the trail around the 141 mile marker (or is it 142? can't remember) so that is where I do 90% of my running.   There is only a portapot right at the beginning behind the hotel so its the woods if you have to go later. Otherwise you can also do the Lakewalk but I think thats only going to give you about 6 miles unless you keep looping.

I usually run on the roads so I'm not much help on the trafficless runs.  But I enjoy running on Skyline Parkway.  It's a nice quiet road with not much traffic.  A couple of hills to deal with but nothing too bad...at least for Duluth hills.

Here is my 20 mile run on Skyline to give you an idea of where it goes.

I also do a run on Skyline on the other end of town on the road that runs by Hawk Ridge.  Miles 4 - 8 on this map are a pretty nice area to run and mostly downhill...but it's a pretty hefty uphill on the way back.  This area also has some decent hiking trails that aren't too bad to run either.

As Liz said the Munger is nice and flat.  I haven't ran only biked and bladed it.  I personally don't like how crowded the Lakewalk is especially now during tourist season...so I avoid that area.  If I wasn't leaving town tonight I would offer to go for a run with you.  I'll be back Sunday if you want to go for a run sometime while you are in town.

Holy crap you are crazy!  I'm afraid to drive on Skyline let alone RUN on it!  People drive like idiots on there.

I haven't died yet.....and actually I've never met anybody that was going too fast or too crazy on there.  It's too rough of a road now for anybody to go too fast without their car shaking apart.

The Lakewalk is great for a nice flat tempo style run.  Like millertime said it will be pretty crowded on the weekend with tourists (although if you stay above Leif Erickson park its not too bad and weekdays shouldn't be too bad).

Check out Hartley Nature Center for some nice flat and smooth trails.  It would be mostly shorter runs here unless you want to do loops.

                Thanks all.

The entire family went down to the lake side park, so I did a 8 miler on the boardwalk.  First run in 10 days!  Leg was a little tight and aching, but much, much better than 10 days ago.  ALso took a short walk into the lake to COOL down.  Wow was that cold - but it felt good.  Will see how I feel tomorrow, but thinking the marathon is on at this time.
