Hello Portland!
Heard this guy on The World on npr today. He ran a 10k in Beijing to see how it felt.

Ah, there's nothing more exciting than science. You get all the fun of sitting still, being quiet, writing down numbers, paying attention...Science has it all. -Skinner

Ugh- sounds like an awful 10K! I already feel terrible for the runners there. Did y'all see this thread- I think it was in the Racing forum- a great short video on the air and how sneaky the officials are being- poor athletes!

Good luck with the VTU Carl! Too bad y'all can't run too but its great that there's some good participation! Have fun!

Glad to hear it hasn't hit 100 in Chicago Chris but that's crazy about the tornado!!! Japhy would've been so scared! I've run before a few tornadoes (little ones in FL and NC) and the sky really does get that greenish look! did you see that?

I didn't see this one until today! I hope that the pollution didn't cause any long-term problems.

Thanks for the good-luck wishes, Katie - everything went well and we all did have a pretty good time! I've seen tornado skies around here too: sea-green, with hail and lightning all about. Scary and fun.

Hey, is Japhy your dog's name, and is it Japhy as in Japhy Ryder? I read the Dharma Bums a long time ago and have relished Hershey bars on hikes ever since. I've had Desolation Angels in my day-job desk drawer for about a year now, but I keep getting distracted by other books.

Ha! Yes, my dog is named after Japhy Ryder (pseudonym as you probably know for the poet Gary Snyder)- Japhy is my favorite literary "character" from my favorite book of all time so I'm SUPER happy that you know and like it too!!! Smile You're the third person ever to be able to place the name. By the time I finished reading the book, I knew I wanted to name my first dog Japhy and luckily, he's lived up to it being quite the free spirit and hiker Smile

I liked Desolation Angels a lot but Dharma Bums is definitely my favorite. I also think Big Sur is one his most well written (they're all well written but its really emotive, in particular) but is very depressing too. Hooray for another Kerouac fan!

Japhy's a great name for a dog!

I've got a used paperback of Dr. Sax that also seriously needs reading. Maybe I'll put Big Sur in front of it, though. There are probably only a few people who, when first hearing about the Big Sur marathon, thought that it was cool that there was a race named after a Kerouac book.

I did read The Subterraneans. A close friend of mine from college gave me a copy several years ago. We used to talk about starting a band and calling it The Subterraneans; although we never did get around to playing out anywhere, he did eventually become the Godfather of one of my children.

Right now I'm painfully trying to get through Kafka's The Castle. Don't ask me why - I'm hoping to know when I get to the end of the thing!
