Up coming races (Read 101 times)

Hello Portland!
Just wanted to see if anyone has plans for any up and coming races.
Bob, your mileage is getting up there again, and if a 13 miler at sub-8 minute mile pace is "easy", are you feeling up for a Christmas race?

I may be looking at the New Years Day run here in Chicago, but it's still tentative.

Looks like Carl's running a 2 miler tomorrow. Is that a typo Carl? Should it read 20, or 200 miles?
Ah, there's nothing more exciting than science. You get all the fun of sitting still, being quiet, writing down numbers, paying attention...Science has it all. -Skinner
Yes, tomorrow I get the chance to see just how slow I can go in a two-mile, hilly, snowy, icy, Penn-State-branch-campus, no-fee, previously postponed Turkey Trot!

(That would make a good t-shirt, wouldn't it?)

I'm think I'm going try to cram knee-high wool socks into my new Nike Zoom Marathoner Bowerman Series racing flats.

ha ha- that would be a great shirt, Carl- have fun! Also, I hope your grandmother is doing better- saw that she was in the hospital from your log. Sorry to hear it. Sad

Bob- what are your thoughts on Disney? Sounds like you're not sure even though you're running tremendously (and still swimming- I don't know how you do it). Want to switch and run the Tampa marathon on Dec. 9th? I'll be there (I think- just set out my training schedule for it and can't think of a reason not to). Or Miami on Jan 27th, I think. But I guess they don't let you transfer or get refunds... Never mind.

Chris- maybe your next "race" can be a 10K with me at the end of my planned marathon (or if the weather is terrible, not-a-marathon-at-all) this weekend. Smile

We got our first real snow here last night- very pretty! I spent 45 minutes walking Japhy and Chris got a run in- yahoo!

Carl, isn't that kinda like ordering a Big Mac and fries, then ordering a diet coke to go with it? Wink Good luck tomorrow.

Chris, is the Chicago New Years day run like the one they have in NY? It's run at midnight, and they serve champagne at the water stop. I hope the race isn't too early at least.

Katie, you're thinking of a marathon on the 9th? Holy crap, that's like this weekend! Nothing like being spontaneous! I've heard good things about Miami. They have a cool medal, don't they? Friends of mine ran it last year then went on a cruise. I called them just 1 hour after the race to see how it went, and they were on the cruise ship already! Didn't waste any time! Thanks for the invite to run, but you're right about Disney not offering transfers or refunds, and I have $225 sunk into the entry fee. My biggest concern about being ready for Disney is wondering how the body will react as the long runs become longer. As it is, it feels like I'm being held together with scotch tape. Regarding the swimming, all I'll say there is that my caffeine intake has increased exponentially since starting the program...

Good luck everyone with all your upcoming races!

Hello Portland!
That New Years Eve race sounds like a fun. Sadly, the one here is at 10 or 11 am on the 1st. I might have to show up with a champagne bottle.

Whoops! The race I'm thinking of is on February 9th (its actually the 10th- I keep writing the wrong date for some reason). Would you want to fly down there and run 1/2 of it or would it be worth the money to stay home? Also, is it full? Even though its illegal, people always want to buy Chicago Marathon entries on Craigslist from others since it fills up- maybe you could recoup some of your money if you decide not to run it. Scotch tape sounds a little shaky... how are you doing mentally with the longer miles?

Ah, Feb. 10th is more like it! That'll give you a few more weeks of training in Chicago's lovely winter weather!

Aside from the race itself at Disney, I'm hooking up with some friends down there, and promised to run with someone in the half to hopefully pace him to a half marathon PR, so regardless of if I run or not, I'll probably go anyway. Plus it's a good chance to go someplace warm! Disney fills up about 9 months in advance.

Mentally, I'm chomping at the bit to run more. The biggest challenge has been holding back.

Thanks again for the offer to meet up at one of those races. You'll just have to qualify for Boston at one of them, and we can meet there! Smile Deal?

me at mile 23 in Tampa: Got... to... meet... up.... with... Bob! Must... stay... focused! Smile

Glad to hear that holding back is the hard part- that's great! Yep- it will be nice down there in Jan.
My brother was at Disneyworld once and was walking by a group of children gathered around a Disney MC saying "Shout at your dreams children! Anything can come true at the Magic Kingdom!" and one little girl screamed out:

I WANT TO BE A PONY!

He said it was so hilarious and it cracks me up every time I think of it.

Hey Katie--I think that's a great dream, but the funniest thing would have been seeing the look on the MC's face!

Also, thanks for asking about my grandmother. She's in the pain-management (palliative-care) stage of her illness, but the treatments are working and she is in good spirits. My dad just retired this year and is stepping up and taking care of her, and is accepting what is happening probably better than I am. My children and I pray for her each night, and we're looking forward to seeing her when we visit my home town over Christmas.

Bob, it's great that you are raring to go! Just keep that Scotch tape on tight, and make sure that you rest whenever any peels loose. At the finish of the Turkey Trot, I told one of the school's cross country runners what you said about the Big Mac and Diet Coke and he got a laugh out of it too.

Chris, have fun at the New Year's Day race. Bringing some of that hair-of-the-dog would be a good idea, I'm sure!

That was really funny about wanting to be a pony! How cute! I wonder if she asked for a refund on her Disney ticket because her dream didn't come true! Or did it? Wink

Another thing to keep you focused at mile 23 is the thought of visiting Mike's Pastry in the North End section of Boston... you have to see that place to believe it!

Carl, I see you kicked butt in your 2 miler! 3rd overall and a 14 second PR! Wow, that's awesome! The miles you've been putting in are paying off!

Would you care to write up a report about how the race went for us?

Great job on your race Carl! That's really fast and awesome that you got a 1st place medal! Glad to hear that the treatments for your grandmother are working as they should and that your dad is getting to spend some important time with your grandmother- I'll keep you guys in my prayers.

Bob- does the pastry shop have bread? I don't have too much of a sweet tooth but if there was such a thing as a bread-tooth, I would have that Smile Bizarre, I know. But I've learned my weaknesses over the years. A bunch of my girls from college live in Boston so I'd hopefully have people cheering for me. Well, I'm going to quit talking about it until I see if A- I can qualify and B- if its not full by the time I potentially do.

Katie, to be honest with you, I'm not sure if Mike's Pastry has breads. I was too focused on the other treats in there to notice.

How nice that you will have a cheering section in Boston for you when you get there! And you will get there! I registered last year at the end of Feb. fyi without a problem, so you will hopefully be ok.

awesome- thanks- I feel better about training for the Feb race if you were ok registering last year. I like that "when" you get there- ha ha Smile Even if I don't qualify, it will be fun to race in my hometown where I'll probably have the biggest cheering section I'll ever get.

But I'm really writing to attach this awesome picture of Chris - look how happy he is!
