Biking (Read 17 times)

I was just looking at some running logs and saw that Chris is riding to work. I just began doing the same thing, although because I live 31 miles away from my job, I'm only biking part way and leaving my little pickup overnight in front of a friend's home to get the rest of the way in to Scranton.

Actually, during my inaugural ride home yesterday I ended up getting stormed on. I probably should've turned back, but I'd been wanting to ride for weeks and I finally had a night where I didn't have to be home at my regular time. This morning's ride back to the truck was much nicer, though.

Riding, I hope, will help with the running some - I'm thinking of it as extra training but without the risk of injury (as long as I don't wipe out!), and a way to save the world's oil and air a teensy bit.

My Peugeot is top-of-the-line, or at least it was in 1985! It's got generator lights and fenders, so I'm feeling awesome about this sweet ride!

Hello Portland!
Gas here in Chicago is $4.40 and traffic sucks. Since the weather got nice, i kept saying i was going to try it and finally did. It actually takes just about as long as driving! I'm liking it a lot though. I figure i could left my bike there and hope the train home if i'm tired, but so far it hasn't been too bad. My quads are loving the workout. I'm still easing into trying to do it multiple times per week.
(Leisurely biking around the city is one thing, getting to work as fast as possible is a workout!)

The city streets here can get a little hairy sometimes, but i'm finding the best routes, those that have bike lanes, and just trying to be careful.

Meanwhile though, i feel like when i do get out to the lake to run, i absolutely LOVE it! I think partially because i'm feeling more rested. I really enjoy the cross-training aspect of it too, as i don't do much of that in any other form.

Glad to hear you're out there with me Carl! Thirty one miles is quite a ride, so i'm glad you've found a way to break it up.
Ah, there's nothing more exciting than science. You get all the fun of sitting still, being quiet, writing down numbers, paying attention...Science has it all. -Skinner
Nice Carl and Chris! If there ever was a good time to start bike commuting, it's now, with the great weather and the price of gas. You'll also get the added benefit of giving the running muscles a break, yet still giving the heart and lungs a workout. Good stuff all around.

My bike commute is 18 miles each way, which seems to be just about the right distance... a good workout without killing yourself too much. I haven't had a chance to do much of it this year yet though. When in college, I was crazy into biking, and would commute 35 miles each way just about every day. Ahh, to be young again.
