I haven't decided whether to concentrate more on trails or roads, but I'll probably do the ones I did this year again. So: Geist Run with the Foxes (if it isn't on the same day as Geist again) a few DINO series Knobstone Trail Mini Monumental probably Indy this time around on Indy and Monumental I'm not sure if I'll do the full or the half. I'm pretty comfortable with the half right now and would like to get down around 1:30 at that distance within the next year, and before I start marathon goals. So, I guess if that happens in May, I will start marathon training, if it doesn't, then I'll probably wait a year.

Good luck on that 1:30. I'm just trying to get to 1:40 in the half. How do you like the DINO runs? Whats the good/bad/ugly.We've been training mostly trails this winter over at Eagle and I thought about running one of their races.

1:30 is going to be a tall order--that's 8 minutes off and is getting around the pace where my heart rate takes a large jump. I like goals I'm unsure about my ability to attain though. I like the DINO runs. I found them very challenging. They have 15k and 5k distances at most or all of their events, and 15k on a trail feels awfully long. Maybe because they have a season scoring chart, there seems to be a chummy community of people who run these races. I won a great pair of shoes at the Town Run race, so I really like that. This is probably true of trail running generally, but your times will be essentially meaningless except as perhaps comparison to the same race the previous year. I was sliding all over the place at Town Run and it probably took at least a minute per mile off my pace. The races are pretty well attended, but after a mile or two, you might find yourself essentially alone in the woods. I don't mind this, but it is very different from the road races many are used to. You'll go a long way without cheering spectators and without anyone to pace off of. A couple of these races though, as well as the Knobstone Trail Mini thrown by the Hoosier Hiker's Council, really developed my mental discipline for the road races.

It turns out I am going to do Geist--I have a trip planned the week after that and was able to push my departure date back a little. CR--just looked at your Sam Costa time...wow, that's a big leap!

Thanks. It was a perfect day to run + the winds were blowing from the opposite direction so the last half was with the wind at your back as opposed to in one's face. I'm still on the fence for Geist. Running St. Louis this weekend and then the Mini (only as a pacer for a friend trying to beat 2:10). I may send it in next week so I can race it. I think I may be able to go sub 1:30 sometime this year but don't know of any races as I plan to run Indy and Monumentals as fulls.

Any updates or PRs?  I'm doing the 15k at Town Run tomorrow mostly as a training run.  I think I'm about to register for the Tecumseh Trail Marathon, which probably will be the end of my life.

CarmelRunner--looking at your log, how are lhr and easy different?  You've been putting in some no bs miles for a while now!

Have fun. I hear its a good run.

PR's have been mostly 5ks this summer. I'm also debating about Tecumseh. Heard great things about it.

LHR is keeping my average heart rate below 137. Usually though it means 130 or less. Easy is between 143 and 150. I subscribe to the Low Heart rate training advocate by Maffetone but I need some increase in HR from time to time so I keep it below 150 for those.

The miles have been piling up and finally I'm dropping some weight. Trying to make all of this come together to BQ at Monumental. You running that one? How's your training going? I don't see any miles in your log so I guess your keeping them offline.

You running Lawrence? I'm on the fence between the half and full but only because I have Notre Dame-USC tickets.

I'm not sure why I quit logging...I really should start again.  Training has been going reasonably well.  I came in around 1:16 in the 15k I think, which was faster than last year and on a course a few hundred meters longer.  I am definitely going to do the Monumental, but I'm torn between the full and the half.  It's such a fast course and I have my hm PR there, so I'm tempted to repeat.  I don't really want to start doing full marathons until I think I have an outside shot at a BQ, and I doubt I'm there yet.  I'm also on the fence about Lawrence, but that one would be the half if I make it out there.  I don't know my weekend schedule that well yet, and I might have to pick and choose a bit.  I think I would rather run the Knobstone Trail Mini again if I have to choose between them.
