Thanks for the envouragement. What you just said about preparation for a trail ultra doesn't sound terribly different from preparing for a marathon. I am also encouraged by the fact that most people do a combination of walk/run for the ultras - in that way, I will actually be doing it like everyone else. I am going to put this particular ultra event on my schedule for the beginning of September and kind of view it as a training event that will give me an experience of doing a very long long-run in preparation for some other 1/2M and Full Marathons that I want to do in the fall and winter. I will use the option of not completing the ultra if my body starts to hurt too much. It's just for fun and training purposes anyway. I need to do something together with other runners.
My body is not responding to training the way it was in the past. I don't recover very well from my runs and find myself taking more time off. Since January when I started maffing I have gained 8 pounds - it is a little depressing.
Maybe it will cheer me up to go out there and participate in some races. I look forward to it. Thanks.

Of the approximately 100 participants on the Big Papio Creek Trail this morning, I estimate 64 cyclists, another 35 walkers, including moi, with the remaining oddball, an inline skater. Strangely, not a single runner was seen!?
Every last one was enjoying the fantastic weather!

How did you manage to gain weight. I have lost 10lbs by cutting out junk foods. 10bls since Maff training. DW is not pleased. Started back on junk foods. Ice cream(lactose intolerance),nuts and peanut butter.Need to gain back 6lbs to keep us happy.

I was very lean when I started maffing - cutting the mileage back from mid 40s to under 20 while maffing may have had something to do with it. Also, I stopped cross training - have not crosstrained the last couple of months. The fat just keeps on building up on my thighs, hips, and abdomen - I can't fit into most of my size 2 clothes anymore. I may have to start crosstraining again to try to stop this trend of fat-building.
My husband was happy when I was tiny and he is happy now - go figure! He's the wonderful thing about our marriage.
I felt good when I was skinny and weighed less.
Why does your wife not like you skinny?
I did not reach 155 lbs until I was 40ish. Never like being that thin. 162 is my target weight.
The last 8 miler was 2:01 not all on the same course .

Three days in a row of running--that's pretty rare for me lately. Have been trying to do it all barefoot, too. As I adjust to the barefooting, I generally have little problem with staying below MAF on a run.
This morning was a tough 2 miler. My feet are ready for a running rest day tomorrow.

That's my one problem too. When I run barefoot, I sometimes can't go fast enough to get my heart rate up to where it needs to be.
I did 4 miles barefoot this morning and stayed around MAF.
Good Morning
Recovery run of 2 miles turned into a 3 mile run. Not nearly as tired as I was last week after my 8 miler.
A fancy 13:11 finishing pace.

Depending on how you look at it, I had a great run or a bad run. I did 8 miles on a route that has about 3 miles of gravel and rocks. I ran in my Vibram FiveFingers, which can make a gravel run very painful. I did this route last year and was almost in tears. But I've learned a lot about running form and barefoot running since then and I was able to run through the gravel without any problems. I moved light and quick and didn't have any problems. However, the quicker steps I had to take raised my heart rate above my MAF so my run this morning kept my heart rate up well above what I was targetting. I'm hoping it doesn't hurt any progress I might have made so far.
