Canberra half IM
sprint triathlons. Sprint distance (750 m swim, 20 km bike, 5 km run). Is this it ?
yip -
well they can vary a bit - the first one Im doing has a slightly shorter (500m) swim, the other is 750/20/5
website
Give or take a few meters on the swim and a few k on the bike. Olympic distance is about double the Sprint.
Half Ironman is 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run = 70.3 miles
Ironman is 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run = 140.6 mile
Sean, good luck with your tri's and post up your results after you compete. I'm planning on entering a couple this year too as my wife has been competing in Sprint tris for about 4 years now. I'm not much of a swimmer, so I've never attempted one. I joined the local TMCA and will be trying the "swimming" thing a couple times a week to get more comfortable inthe water. I'm thinking of doing a 5k/25k/5k duathlon in May so I don't have to swim.
2012 Goals:
5k = sub 22:00
10k = sub 45:00
HM = sub 1:40:00
Run = 2000 miles
Bike = 3000 miles
Swim = 130 miles

Alas, it's just a dream.
I manage to travel arms length to the snooze button, however.
Scheduled a much needed slow, cathartic run, for this morning, but now it will have to wait.
Sigh.
Have you had a look at Total Immersion? It's all about swimming efficiently and being comfortable in the water, rather than doing lots of laps.
It seems a bit weird at first - lots of drills that aren't really swimming - but I've been doing it now for about a month using a DVD and book and its definitely a lot easier way to swim, though not really quicker (yet anyway).
They also have courses, but I think they are a bit overpriced
Crazy weather with temps settling in at 31 F.
Sidewalks, parking lots coated with a glaze of ice.
Roadways not much better. I manage a slippery 4 miles or so.
Snowmen for sale. Some assembly required

Same weather we are having here in central MN. Yesterday I felt it was too slippery and not worth a fall so I went to the local YMCA and ran on their indoor track. 11 laps to a mile and completed 82 laps in 1:15:00, HR = 152

I'm going to look into that, thanks.
Hey everyone, I haven't posted in awhile mainly because I'm not MAFing right now, although this is a LHR training forum and not devoted to the Maffetone Method. I felt I needed a little change of pace, pun intended, so I started LHR training using HR zones that I calculated from my percentage of HRR. I've been running in my Zone 2 aerobic zone (60 - 70% HRR which is 140 to 156 bpm) for nearly two weeks now and its been going very well. I've noticed that my pace has quicken (as I expected) but my Ave HR has steadily been dropping.

I am in a similar situation. After well over a year of maffing at 130, I have recently started using 140 as my "MAF" number. I still consider this LHR training as it is 70% of my MHR just like the homepage for this group states. After just a few weeks, I am seeing evidence of progress.
Also, I did my first triathlon sprint this past August. And swimming is definitely my weakest part. I am now trying to pattern my swim technique after Karlyn Pipes-Neilson. I bought her freestyle DVD with some of my Christmas stocking money and have been trying to change my stroke. Right now I experiencing DOMS because of the different muscles I am using.
BTW, how can they call an event that takes longer than an hour to finish a sprint?
Easy, compare it to trying to get a qualifying time of under 17 hours for a full Ironman!
140.6.......Someday?

Good job on a slippery 4 miles!
Burnt Toast -- all those laps-- wow! Good job getting the run in.
Two very consistent runs for me: 6.12 miles (2 hours) last night and 3.25 miles (1 hour) today, both with an average HR of 142 and max of 152.
Run until the trail runs out.

Decker Challenge 12/12
Starting over? Cardiologist and I made a medication change at Wed visit and it may have changed my hr profile based on this mornings 7mi run. I was targeting a maf in the 107-112 area and ran a maf test Tue with ahr=109. This morning I had a heck of a time keeping hr at 102 and it didn't hit 109 until near the end of a long ~1/2 mi 4-5% grade hill! I held a constant pace to see if I could get it up over 107 and finally did. I completed a mile before the top so the next lap actually hit mhr=111, but I was slowing down by that time to cool down.
We changed an expensive angiotensin II receptor antagonist, Diovan HCT, with a generic ACE inhibitor lisinopril hct which should save me over $300/year. The ACE inhibitor relaxes blood vessels more than the Diovan class of drugs and I think it could be making it harder to maintain maf/near maf hr. I'm going to have to go by feel and see what happens. Will do a longer run tomorrow with target hr below maf then a couple of easy days in prep for a maf test on wed or thur next so I can see what is going on. Body could just be adjusting to the new med. Could be overshooting then might settle down back where things were. Who knows. Listen to yer body is the guide word!
Keep on, keeping on! running that is. cheers all
bob e v 2012 goals: keep on running! Is there anything more than that?
Finish 2 halves, 3M Half 1/29 and probably Decker Challenge in Dechistory: blessed heart attack 3/15/2008; c25k july 2008 first 5k 10/26/2008, 62nd birthday; 1st 10k 2/28/2009 - 50 wks from heart attack to 10k; 1st Half Marathon 11/9/09 20 months from heart attack! !
15 miles*** 3:14:05 ahr 135/mahr 150(12 miles). Does not include 2 mile WU and 1 mile CD. Goal was to fininsh in under 3:10 and keep HR under 150. 12 miles pace 12:38. Goal pace 14:00. The run felt easy. Not wasted after wards. Went shopping with DW. I think the difference is" time on feet". Normally 15 miles take about 3:35 if I stay at Maff 126. Only 1 major hill. Right knee pain at 8 miles . Left knee pain at 11 miles. Thighs burning at 13 miles after climbing hill. None of the pain last more than a minute. Hoping to avoid a repeat of my 15 mile race in Oct.
hhh my first report. Did 10.8 kms ave hr was 133. Hr did skip over 138 a few times but according to garmin centre i was only out of zone for 1.16 minutes so im got goign to owrry about it this time as im still getting used to things. Pace is very slow but over the first 5 km i walked 15 times wheres on thurs wehn i did same course similar condition but was only letting hr drop 5 beats before running again i had to walk 25 times so thats a big improve plus i dnt think i walked much longer.. So ave pace was 8.16 and i will consider today my first session as i now have the info i needed.
I did a 10 min warm up but might increase that to a 1.6km one which brings me to beginning of river trail and that is what i walk for cool down but i dont include either in my datad

Nicely done You appear to have slowed down by only 2:00. At one point in my training I slowed down by 5:00.
