I spent most of my training for a few months for a 50 miler in September of last year at around 78% of my MHR. I think running in that range allowed me to run basically all day, but at the severe expense of speed.

On a run at around 90% of my MHR, which feels fine, I'm running in the 7:50-8:10 min/mi range depending on temperature and terrain.

On runs at around 78% of my MHR, however, I'm running in the 9:00-10:30 range, depending on the temperature and terrain.

I cannot imagine even running at the 70% mark! I'd be going very very slowly! Should I be forcing runs at 70% irrespective of speed? How long should I keep this up before I should see speed increases? My weekly volume right now is 20-30 mpw but will average at 40 mpw in the spring, with some weeks in the 80 mpw range.

I suggest you read the stickies, especially the FAQ and the boilerplate, taking some time to read the links to Mark Allen and Dr. Phil's website. The basic facts are all there.

Why are you considering MAF training?

Hey wander,

Welcome to Maffeville!
I've been groping around here for quite some time. Can truly attest to finding my way through the practice of LHR/MAF! Go slowly and explore. You'll enjoy the Maffe journey.

Couldn't help but notice from your tag that you're at ground zero in terms of the racing scene! No, I'm not speaking of the Boston Marathon, but rather the huge Senate race.. Tuesday's event contesting Teddy's seat. Most profound.

I'm qualified to influence neither. Close call as to which I'd prefer, BQ or ballot.
Anyway, enjoy!

I read a little bit of that a long time ago ... I suppose I don't have enough time to do so in great detail at the current moment. Yes, I was hoping for some qnd help, but alas.

Re: election ... Yes, it's interesting to be spatially near the center of the some of the nation's attention (Haiti is the urgent concern). I also don't have a very good gauge on how much of the country cares, but I'm getting the sense that people feel this is an important election because of that whole 60th vote thing. Politics is such a weird thing.

I will be voting, but I am undecided currently. For me it's between two candidates, and not necessarily those two.

We spent a lot of time working on the boilerplate, so forum members wouldn't have to keep repeating themselves to newbies. Maybe you have time to read this:

If I answered your question, I'd essentially be rewriting this Boilerplate post.

Good luck!

It's not Teddy's seat, it's the people's seat.  And the people she wants to represent won't be too happy when they find out she called Curt Schilling a "Yankee fan."  What's next? Larry Bird is a Laker's fan?

Nice of you to join us.  I won't disrespect you or your running experience and suggest that there are easy answers to the questions you raise.  I also don't want to simply offer up my opinions on what the answers may be for you.  I'll just second Jimmy on his recommendation that you review the "Boilerplate" thread.  The real heart of it is in the first two entries on page 1 (Jesse's and Jimmy's).  It's an incredible resource that summarizes not only pages and pages of background material but years and years of their personal experiences.

I agree with Jimmy that the boilerplate will help you get square with the basics of this training, and (for what it's worth) I agree with the overwhelming majority of what's written there.

But let me level with you: it is possible that you could run at under 70% of your max HR forever and never get faster.  There are a lot of factors besides your running that play into developing speed from low heart rate training.  That said, if you give it an honest shot and aren't getting faster it means that something's amiss.  It doesn't mean that you're a bad runner.  But it also doesn't mean that low heart rate training is wrong.  It just means there's some factor in your life that's causing you stress and holding you back (like maybe that crazy ex...).  I like low heart rate running for just that reason - it offers me a window into all that's going on in my life and health as a whole.

One last point:  It's said "There are many paths to the one truth." Likewise, there are lots of different ways to practice "low heart rate training" (whatever that phrase means).  Most of us here probably gravitate most strongly toward Dr. Maffetone's methods, but there are others here who get great results with Van Aaken, Mittleman, Hadd, Lydiard, and others (heck, even Douillard got another "shout out" here recently).  There are even a few of us who break from the pack and try to make our own paths - with varying degrees of success.  It's a friendly crowd and there's room for all of us here.  So pull up a chair, get yourself a beverage, and join in the discussion.  Welcome aboard.

If Scott Brown wins, that line will go down in history with "I am paying for this microphone, Mr. Green." as one of the defining one liners of Republican politics.

That said, can we all agree that it's the balance of Ted Kennedy's term that's in play?

bdags,

Ms. Coakley's "Curt Schilling comment" amused me,as well. She should have gone nonpartisan and claimed that Babe Ruth was a Yankee fan. Politics 101!
Mr. Brown's comment on it being "the peoples' seat" is a bit hard to swallow, too.
I think most of America suffers from this illusion.

Here in Nebraska we have a rascal in a senate seat who largely ignored "the wishes of the people".

Come November, we send a replacement. Life goes on.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
I believe Yogi said that. Don't quote me on that, though.

Unfortuately your Senator isn't up for reelection until 2012.  I'm sure between now and then he will announce that he'd like to spend more time with the grandchildren.  I heard he got chased out of a restaraunt by angry constituents the other day.  Was that you Lowgear?

Another classic quote from Brown's rally today:

"Before the president rushed to the scene, we saw my opponent standing with a former president, the governor, the senior senator, the appointed senator – the whole party establishment, right on down the line.

At the beginning, it felt like me against the machine. But guess what? I was wrong. It’s us against the machine."

Didn't mean to turn this into a political thread, but that's pretty good.

bdags,

Yes, (2012!) We here in Ne have rushed to judgement. While not a fait accompli, Ben is pretty much toast.

No, lowgear wasn't in attendance at the pizza joint. Hard to determine what actually transpired. Typical damage control efforts came from the senator's entourage.

With the Mass. results now in, maybe we can step back and do things properly.

I concur. It's high time to put the political jazz aside!

Gotta run!

Pretty crazy finish. They're saying Coakley was using low HR training in her last few weeks before the election. I think she probably just tapered too early (after the primary).
