Low HR Training

Thanks Jimmy and Bzaganjo. You are right Jimmy, my MAF pace would need to get to the low 9s and that can't happen without more miles. I am what my MAF pace says I am. The best MAF pace I have ever run is in the low 10s, and based on the MAF table, that projects to close to what I run the 5k in. I actually run it a little faster, but the table is pretty close for me. I think is it really interesting to see how all of this lines up. I have run enough races now to know my ceiling, and once you hit that ceiling, it is very hard to go beyond that without some major adjustment to training. Congratulations, Bzaganjo on your improvement over last year. I enjoyed one of your earlier race reports, when you ran in one of the Fresh Pond races. I live in the same area, and had run that race course many years ago. It is a nice course.

Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon - Fredericksburg, VA Rainy, 60 F 1:38:02 186 out of 4923 finishers (21 out of 469 age group) Splits 5-K 24:18 10-K 47:45 15-K 1:11:04 Bad week leading into this one - woke up sick as a dog on Monday and wasn't feeling myself all week. Take a look at my log and guess the reason why I was prone to illness. Also, I broke one of my toes on Thursday evening, but it didn't interfere with my stride, so I taped up and went. All things (excuses) considered, this was a decent run. The start/finish is in a huge outdoor shopping mall, but most of the race runs through some nice neighborhoods and historic areas of Fredericksburg. I got stronger as the race wore on and was able to pick up the pace and really hammer it from 15-K to the end, which was satisfying because the biggest uphill was on that part of the course. Passed a lot of people over the last 5 miles and no one passed me. Still, this was nearly 7 minutes off of my PR, so I was clearly dogging it a bit early as I was trying to figure out how my body would respond. Lest you think I've sold out, the splits are courtesy of the mats on the course. Again, I didn't wear a watch and just ran by feel. No split clocks on the course made this easy. It was funny, because I didn't see a clock at the finish I didn't know how fast I'd run until I saw the final results later in the day.

Thanks for the props guys. It was fun, but now I gotta catch some rest. Already getting problems from the faster stuff. Gonna take some cues from Washington and pander shamelessly to my base for a few weeks. I'm still a little bummed about dogging it early this time. I might be laid back in training (after all my avatar is The Dude), but races are "go time" for me. I was too cautious early while I tried to figure out how I was feeling, and it cost me. Ripping the last 3.8 miles at more than 20 seconds per mile faster than my overall average pace is all I need to see. I'll get that sub 1:30 one of these days, though. My PR's too close not to. LG - great to have you back. You've been missed. FWIW I think you're doing the right thing with your training.

I ran Bostons run to remember half marathon this morning. Last year I ran the same race and finished in 1:39:50. This year I had trained way more during the winter and knew that I could break 1:30. Not sure how much I was going to go under it by, but I knew that I could.

Perfect race conditions at the start and for the first half of the race. Temps were about 60 and a little cloudy, but the sun was coming out. The race got under way and I wanted to stay under 7 for every mile. I got stuck at the back which made me a little paranoid at the beginning, but after the 1st mile I was fine. At mile 3, I was talking to this guy and he said he was going for 1:27. So from there on out, I stuck to him the rest of the way. By mile 12, we were still together and I had a little more in the tank so I ran a 6:22 final mile (we had been running 6:30's - 6:40's. The final stretch is about a half mile of straight road and you can see the finish line. I was trying to get in the 1:25:'s, but finished a little after at 1:26:08. A new PR for me for the half.

I had the idea that I was going to do this half and then run a full in the fall. For a few reasons, first there are no full marathons in this area this time of year and a bunch to choose from in the Fall. Now I don't know what to do because I know I can qualify for Boston (3:10), but really don't feel like waiting until the Fall to do it.

If I were you I would find an out of town Full M to travel to and race to qualify for Boston ASAP - you don't know how long you can stay in this kind of peak conditioning before you start to see your times drop. Flower, I was all set this afternoon to sign up for Lake Placid in 3 weeks, but it was full. I then checked the flights to Minnesota for a marathon and the flights were $400. Just can't do that right now which really stinks. So it looks like I will try to BQ in October. I figure I will sign up for the Hartford Marathon on October 10th or the Bay State Marathon October 18th. Until then I guess I'll get back to MAFF'ing during the week with some races here and there.

Ran the Sunburst marathon in South Bend yesterday and this one can fit into LHR category or racing but I will put it here. I ran with one of my running partners who simply wanted to finish so I looked at this as a training run. Well we ran 20 miles together and he wanted to run walk the rest and I wanted to see if I could push the finish so I could get past that mental challenge that got me at St. Louis. Well here is the tale of the tape:

First 20 miles were ran in 3:06:21( 9:19 pace with AHR of 139). Last 10K was covered in 49:06 (7:55 pace with AHR of 155) for a grand total of 3:55:27. I had trouble at mile 23 but simply decided to push through and it worked. Once I got to the base of a hill at 24, I was on the move and the rest flowed. I have to give a big shout to Jimmy for giving me a clue on this from his Vermont marathon experience. I think I understand how to hit the last 10k now and having finished fast will help me with my BQ attempt in November.

Now for the marathon = incredible. 600 runners, over 23 aid stations, a beautiful course along the St. Joe River and a finish at the 50 yard line of Notre Dame staium. If you want a great value and a great marathon, I recommend this one in a big way.

I really enjoyed being a pacer. I didn't use any pace bands just ran it by feel and was doing well. I hope I can do it again sometime to help some others hit their goal times.

As for mile 23, I started feeling tired and wanted to slow back to the previous pace. I decided that I would just push until the next aid station and get a couple of cups of water and see what happens. I kept pace to the aid station and took two glasses one of which I swished and the rest I dumped on me. I got a "kick" out of that (the cold water changed on what my mind was focusing - cool feeling vs. keep pace) and went right back to my faster pace. I think I was getting a bit heated, but mostly I just needed to focus on something other than pace. Once I just focused on running and not on time/pace, the pace was there and the legs were there. I passed so many people on the way to the finish that it got me really charged.

My take was the legs were fine, I just needed to stop fixating on pace and just focus on "run". I learned much about the marathon this past Saturday.
