When I started running 2 1/2 years ago I was 190 6 1" supposedly 15% fat. 34-35" waist pants size. Supposedly I was 15-18% body fat. I am now 177lbs waist is 32-33 and body fat is 9.2%. Have I gotten faster. Yes. Now Ideally in clothes I look the best at 190lbs but I feel the best at 177. I was considering losing a few more lbs to help with running. But my wife thinks if I lose anymore weight I would look sickly. She said you used to look to thin. I said I have been 177lbs for a 16 months now. So what do you mean I used to look to thin. I have not gained or lost any weight. So, I would not go by what your wife or family says, but by what you feel. My purpose for eating is to run. Simple is that. If I lose weight then ok if I don't I am ok with that as well. I am not making any conscious decision to lose or gain weight. I eat healthy and about 7 times per day.

So let it rip - If you advocate an Ornish (or Atkins) diet, speak up and say why. Likewise if you think someone else has it right
I was motivated to change my diet in an attempt to get off my cholesterol medication. My own research had led me in the direction of Joel Fuhrman's Eat to Live. Then a colleague at work turned me onto John McDougall's free program (http://www.drmcdougall.com/free.html). I started with his 12 day meal plan and it got me off of Lipitor. It is a low fat, starch based diet; No meat or fish, no dairy and no eggs. I boycott anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup in it. I also mill my own wheat flour and bake it into 100% whole wheat bread. I am not fanatic about it though. On special occasions, I will break the rules. I just "call a Mulligan" and join in the celebration. For example, I had pork BBQ at my brother's wedding reception. And I will probably have some turkey for Thanksgiving. Now, I am doing Low Heart Rate Training to change my metabolism. I want to build muscle and lose fat. So far I seem to be trending in the right direction. It is just taking a while. Currently I am 25.3% body fat ( 70/14.5/38 ). 15% body fat seems like a nice goal.

I strongly recomend reading this article first : http://www.treeoflife.nu/whyfat as the fat in nutrition is the most missunderstood issue, also explain why Pritikin, Ornish etc are very wrong and dangerous happy body defatting

My hat's off to all those contributing to this discussion. Don't you find runners to be idealistic, in the best sense of the word? If so, pat yourself on the back! The degree of knowledge is unmatched, and everything from Jenny Craig to stomach stapling seems fair game. I acknowledge that people far wiser than I, have devoted lifetimes to research in these areas. That is commendable..and you knew this was coming......but, and it's a big butt.... and I don't mean to trivialize any of the study, but if I could be Obama's "Czar of Health, Education and Welfare"..(yes, czar.. I sometimes choose my words carefully, comrade.)... Diet and exercise would be the new mantra. What a revolutionary concept! Think of the massive savings. Huge reductions in "childhood obesity", type II diabetes, heart disease, metabolic issues, yadda yadda. Sure, Big Pharma, Big Govt, Big this, Big that, would all have to be weaned, butt... we didn't get this phat overnight, don't ya know. ..and U thought C. Everett Koop was blowin' smoke...
