q day
As far as I know, Dick Beardsley has been out-kicked twice. Once in the 82' Boston Marathon (often called the "Duel in the Sun") by Alberto Salazar. And, the second time, by James Jackson in what may be called the Bass Pro Shoot-Out. James and I ran together today and we caught up to Dick at around mile 7. He too was pacing himself at a blazing pace just under 8 minutes a mile. We tucked in and ran with him the rest of the way. However, with about 200m left, James found another gear and out-kicked him by 11 seconds. Alberto only got him by 2! In Dick's defense, he wasn't pushing for a PR! In James defense, he was just giving all he had, as usual. This was JJ's first 1/2 marathon and he stated later his best race ever! It was the first time he has ever run an even pace. His finishing time was 1:43:29 on his 497th consecutive day of his streak! His parents were there to see him and his older brother finish! They are both a bit competative with each other, but to add even more icing, James finished about 5 minutes ahead of Mike. Sweet was the day for fellow Columbian, James Jackson!
In other news, Tom May finished 14th overall in 1:23:07 (I think) as the 2nd overall Master! What a great race and I would recommend it to all the Lunatics. Max went down with us and last night the four of us had dinner with Frank Shorter, Jeff Galloway, and Dick Beardsley. Amazing to sit next to legends and hear them talk about running!
