April 3rd Marathon Party/Info Session/Q&A (Read 354 times)

q day

With Boston, St. Louis, Nashville, Ogden, etc., quickly approaching, I thought a Party/Info Session/Q&A would be fun/helpful. I've reserved D Rowe's back room from 7-9pm on April 3rd. It has a projector, screen, and seats upwards of 50 people. I've already arranged for two presentations/Q&A's, and plan to come up with a few more. First, Steve Stonecipher-Fisher is putting a "How to run Boston" presentation together. He ran 3 Boston's and had very different results in each. The first year he did the classic "Out too fast" method, finishing in 2:38. The second time, heat was a factor, he adjusted accordingly, and was happy to finish in 2:27:09. His 3rd attempt produced a PR of 2:16:36 (5:12 per mile), when everything finally came together. The more I read about Boston, the more I'm convinced that it may be one of the hardest Marathons to get "Right". Steve will elaborate on why! Next, I've asked John Palmer to present on proper hydration. He recently did a presentation at University Hospital about fluid balance issues for marathoners. Dehydration, Hyponatremia, Hypokalemia are serious issues, and there is no telling what we will face (weather wise) come race day. With the recent death of Ryan Shay (cause of death still unknown), a runner at Chicago, Little Rock and the Army 10 mile, I think that this issue can be overlooked. Not to steal John's thunder, but did you know that some fluid overloaded Marathoners can gain 7 pounds DURING the marathon! Hard to imagine! I'm open to suggestions of other topics, fun ideas or............well anything. For instance, I can imagine someone doing a presentation on the womens trials. Many of us plan to watch it live the day before Boston, or for others, on TV. The more we know before the race, the more exciting it will be. I plan to invite the Lunatics and local Boston qualifiers first, then open it up to others interested. There isn't a charge for the room, with the expectation that we will do a little eating and drinking while we are there. I told them I didn't think that would be a problem. Please don't hesitate to call me with suggestions! 999-3838 Boston or Bust! El Presidente

Darrin, This sounds like a great evening and I look forward to coming. Thanks for putting this together. I don't have any additional ideas as I'm mainly interested to see what Steve has to say about his experiences running the Boston course and the unique challenges that it presents for those of us running it for the first time.

          q day

Please help me pass the word to all of these "Boston bound" runners. I plan to make a flier and give it to Mike Tripp, but word of mouth is even better! And, as I've said, this is not limited to Boston runners only. The more the merrier! Just let them know we'll start off with the "How to run Boston" presentation.

I will be there as well. Can we bring our significant others or is space pretty limited?

              q day

Bring anyone you want! The room is very large and if we run out of room at the tables, there will be plenty of chairs!
