If you were running in a small low-entry fee (<$20) marathon that ran over the same roads several times (out and back, and several loops), would you want mile markers out on the course?   Or would it be confusing to see many of the markers before you reached that point in the race?  (You might see a sequence like - Miles 14, 7, 25, 8 because of the way the loops worked out.)
