A Christmas Letter...from Mike E (Read 42 times)

Merry Christmas…Every Day of the Year

    (Yeah…it’s Another Christmas Letter)

'Twas four months before Christmas, it was humid and wet,

I know it was August, the exact day I forget.

I was on my way home with some work on my mind,

When it popped in my head that two cards I must find.

Missy and Lori—their birthdays were near,

They're one day apart—it's the same every year.

So I pulled off the freeway and found a Hallmark

And I found a nice place where I knew I could park.

It's your normal Hallmark with dumb stuff all around

But I knew the right aisle where the cards could be found.

So I headed that way cause I hadn't much time

    And I read every card—every word—every rhyme.

When what did I see from the side of my eye?

But a sight that I saw made me break down and cry.

I ran down the aisle and I started to shout,

"You can’t be putting your Christmas stuff out!"

"Are you people all mad—have you all lost you mind?

This is cruel, I must tell you...it's really unkind!

‘Cause when Debbie sees this—and I assure you, she will—

She'll come looking for me with a look that will kill!”

"'Our Christmas letter,’ she'll say, 'you must write

And you'll start it right now if you don't want a fight.'"

You all know my wife—she's a wonderful lass

But when it comes to our letter she's a pain in the...well you know...

Then a sweet little lady, she said to me, "Pet,

If you don't quiet down, out of here you must get!”

"I'm sorry," I said, "and you couldn't know better,

But it's really too soon to start writing our letter!"

"It's August," I cried, "it's too soon for this stuff!

Bring it out in November!" I said in a huff.

Then she looked at me sweetly and she said to me, "Dear,

We should celebrate Christmas every day of the year."

Well, I purchased my cards and I left that dumb store,

It was all I could take—I couldn't take any more.

But on the way home I couldn't stop thinking.

The words that she said, in my mind they were sinking.

The longer I thought, the more she was right,

Christmas is more than just one single night.

A lifetime of gifts were rolled up in one,

When God came to earth as Jesus, His son.

It's that gift we remember on each Christmas Day,

When Jesus was born to show us the way.

The way into Heaven for all of us here,

It's a gift to remember every day of the year.

The spirit of Christmas—the spirit of giving,

We should live in this spirit every day that we’re living.

Give to the needy, the poor, and the lame.

Give to them all in Jesus’ name.

Jesus the Christ child, sent from God up above,

A gift to us all—a gift of pure love.

Every day of the year it’s a gift to remember,

Not just on one day—one day in December.

So I pulled in our driveway, now, safely at home

And I flew to my room to work on this poem.

And when I was done I let Deb read it, too

And she said with a smirk, “Yeah, I guess it will do.”

“There is just one thing, Mike, that I really don’t get,

Why would that lady think of calling you ‘Pet’?”

Well, I just rolled my eyes and I patted her head,

I could have been mean but said, “I don’t know, Dear,” instead.

So what if it's summer and humid and hot

Celebrate Christmas with all that you've got.

You can even sing carols, if that’s what you like

And Merry Christmas all year, from Debbie and Mike.

Knowing you Mike, you whipped this letter up in one day   Did we ever tell you how much we like having you on this forum?

Merry Christmas to you and Debbie, and to quote Charles Dickens, "God bless us, everyone."

You've outdone yourself this year, Mike!  Great poem.   Merry Christmas to you and your whole crazy family!

And Merry Christmas to the whole crazy RA Masters family, too.

I hammered down the trail, passing rocks and trees like they were standing still.

                Yes, yes, yes!

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."
