Linda, yay on your 4 miles!   Smile.   ... you're right, we are all pretty good at 'stupid'.   it's become, sort of, a specialty.  ;-).   Any updates on your dad?

Roberta, it's good to hear from you.   I'm sorry about all the things you're having to deal with... is this the same DD that had all the health problems during her pregnancy?  I hope she gets over this soon!     Take care of yourself.  Do you eat complex carbs?

HappyFeat, thanks for the (book) recommendation.  I think I've heard before that it's good, not sure where.   I think Nono (you'll meet her on the daily thread Smile ) uses it.  I do have a book on trigger points by Bonnie Pruden, but haven't had the patience to work clear through it.  Maybe the workbook would help.  I try to use the stick regularly, esp. on my calves & shins.  that does help me, & seems to tackle some trigger points.  Well, it might.  Not sure!      I'm so behind... your post was on the 14th.   How did you run the next day go?

Laurie, have you seen a doctor about your shins?  Where is the pain?  I had a lot of problems with what I called shin splints,  though it's kind of an umbrella term, a while ago.   Stretching my calves helped a lot .  (but I think we've talked about that...)   & again, the stick.  But depending on what's wrong, that could help or hurt.   HappyFeat, what do you think about that?  Sounds like you've had experience with this too....  ( I agree about the ice!!  I carry 4 ice packs with me in a freezer thing when I run, & slap them all over for the drive home. )

My recovery is going pretty well, thanks for asking!   6 miles this morning.  little aches, but no biggies.  I start this week traiining for the Shamrock in March, but still don't know exactly what plan I'm using, so  it's a little weird.  I have books & printed out plans laying all over the place.

Laurie, thanks for bumping us.   I do need to go back to the old thread, there were some things there that I wanted to answer.

    Teresa... how are you?

Hi to everybody else.  Hope youa re all well Smile

Happy feat. I will try the ice. Actually usually I ice the hamstring right after the run. But today I forgot.

I went to a massage appointment today and told my therapist that i was in a funk and to put on some good music. So he worked on my leg and did some energy work too. Then when I was getting ready to leave he said 'oh I have your plate'. I had made him cupcakes last visit. So he gives me the plate and on it is an apple pie he made me. My funk ended there. So between that and a call from a friend in another state I felt pretty darn good by evening time!!

Greetings all.  A brief explanation on the sounds of silence on my part.  Hopefully confession is good for the soul and maybe you guys will help keep me in line.  I’m embarrassed because it’s taken me so damn long to start doing something about everything that is conspiring to keep me from running.   And when I’m embarrassed, I clam up.  On-line too apparently, just like real life.  Ask my DW—it drives her absolutely bonkers (polite term--@#$%ing crazy is more accurate)  But I am keeping track and lurking with the spot comment.

I finally got out my list of exercises for knee, shin splints and the core workout that got mentioned here a while back.  I’m figuring on a couple of weeks of no running (on top of the past several weeks of very minor and aggravating running) to work on this and try to make all the x-training a habit before I start up again.  I’m figuring that I will start with the one hour runner plan again to re-re-re-build my base.  It worked well the last time and should be fairly easy to keep up with through the winter.  I missed most of the winter running this past year and don’t want to do it again.  I started with the knee work last night and will work in everything else over the next couple of days.  Coming into the holidays is a great time to start, but I’ve never had great timing.

Max has been somewhat deprived lately, so I’m also hoping to get a couple miles in with him most nights to keep some semblance of shape.  We shall see.  It does mean that I’ll blow off the Jinglebell Run that I’ve gone to the past couple years (12/13) since I’m not sure I’ll be able to run the whole thing.  I have a faint thought that I’d like to do the Hampton half in February, but that could be highly overambitious.  More realistically is a half in Westfield, MA in early April that I had planned on doing this year (before a-fib intruded)

apple pie and a massage--sounds like a pretty decent way to de-funk.

Sorry--I spent too much time typing about me and it's time to hit the road.  i'll be back later (I hope)

Happy running and recovering to all.

Next?  Could there be 26.2 somewhere???

        I can dream, can't I?

I just have a minute... but jKevin, no need to be sorry at all.   so glad you unclammed.  it's all understandable, & the process is not a foreign one.   great plan!!  good for you.  it's sort of like rebooting, last known good configuration!  Wink.   but will take a lot more patience than hitting a key.  so we are here to bug you when needed.   it's helpful to me to read what you wrote.  lots of things i need to start over on too.   stick around, whydon'tcha.

Kevin - ahhh it happens.  no worries and {{hugs}}   Sounds like a good plan to get things going again Smile

Kevin, here is where you go for support with all that stuff. But eh, clamming up is a guy thing. We understand. Anyhow we are very experienced rehabbers! We can get you through this. Shin splints...yep workout the calve muscles. Whats going on with the knee?  YES Do the Westfield half!. I will do it with you. See you got built in local support and running partner.

              Hello all newbies!

I did a 5 hour night hike Tues along a ridge with no headlight with my cycling partner. Ate dinner on top of a mountain looking out over a town at night. Well I need to stop calling him my cycing partner and spill the beans. We went from cycling partners this summer to friends to dating. So I will just call him bf from now on.

Laurie Looks like the next chance I will get to run is Sunday. Ugh.

ps...advice of the day..try not to drive your significant other $^%&ing crazy.

                Morning -

yesterday I did the 5/1 run walk on the program.. feeling good Smile

Deb - how are you?  Dad is doing better, relaxing & recovering at home.

How is everyone else doing?  Mike?

Kevin - let us know how you're doing, ok?

                aka kameele

greeting, all--thanks for the hugs.  now I just need to avoid the need for kicks

got my plan off to a rollicking start yesterday morning--woke up with a flutter, so was able to get to the lab nearby BEFORE it quit this time.  it cleared about 10 minutes after i talked with my regular heart doc's office.  the EKG was also sent to the guy that did the ablation.  Both cardiologists said that it wasn't a-fib or flutter, and sort of a random occurance.  Good and bad, iguess.  no really bad rythym, but still not fun.  i have a final followup with ablation doc on early Dec. so will ask for more details then.   Now I just need to start the plan TOMORROW.

Linda--does that mean 5 miles?  seems like things are going well.  Maybe a little more relaxed about Dad at this point?

Laurie--Amazing what you can find in the dark along a trail.    congrats on the transition.  Do we get to call him bf, too?

Deb--I need to be a creature of habit; my memory or will power isn't good to do it any other way.  But why is it so much easier to develop BAD habits than the good ones?

Hi to everyone else--Roberta, Mike, Happy, EliΩ, et al

                  In the meantime--Ukrops' 10K March 31st.

I'm here. My running is going pretty well. With ice and massage, I'm down to just one knot in my outer right calf. Last night I got a new pain along the inner right knee from below to above.  (Could be because I was inspired to run 6 miles the night before. Where's my common sense?)  The tendon is taut and painful as can be. I iced last night and will look it up in my book tonight. I'm pretty sure it's from the TM.  I recently lowered the incline and the cushioning both to 0% and I think that is making it more comfortable for now. I'm really looking forward to the weekend and running outdoors in the daylight - yaay!  I watched a scary TV show recently, so I haven't been about to run outside at night for a couple weeks. I'm afraid of the Bogey Man! I'm very grateful that I have a TM, even if it's not as comfortable as the pavement.

DG asked me about shinsplints - I actually have never had that problem, but have probably had every other leg muscle complaint. Ice and massage have been my tried and true solutions. I do know someone who had a longstanding shinsplint problem finally solved by going to a PT who recommended taping for the run, and soaking the lower leg in a bucket of ice water after running. Took a few weeks, but the problem did go away and he didn't have to continue the tape or the ice after that.

                    Happy Friday, everyone!

The Pace Bunny is my Sole Mate.

Kevin, go with what your doc says and just consider it a fluke. These things happen. Worry makes them worse. If you want I will email you my worry story and how I learned not to worry. Makes my heart work better. You can call him the same thing I call him...hot army ranger stud muffin. lol.

Happy feat, quad strengthening and knee brace until the pain goes away. Maybe the knee cap isnt tracking right.

Deb, I see your posts in the daily every now and then. Sounds good. How the heck do you keep up with that thread. Too many posts for me.

Mike, Eliz, Theresa, L's, how the heck are ya?

Laurie (no time for runs since Tues)

Mom bragging time.....Kim passed her EMT test and is now certified and running 8 miles!

                        Morning!

Kevin - nope that means 5 minutes run/1 minute walk - it was 3 times... I'm doing a running program to build my stamina & make my footsie happy on the treadmill.  And then I'm trying to run 1 day outside on the weekend and have been doing 2 miles on hills..  I think I may try & do more on the bike path tomorrow (since its flatter) and see what happens...  bummer on the event that happened.  interested to see what the doc says about it.  in the meantime, just be smart about it & listen to your gut feeling.  Smile   I am not freaking out anymore about  my dad,   but I'm still worried.  Still very uncertain about the new diagnosis, but will know more when I'm there for Thanksgiving weekend, so am trying to reserve my judgement until then.

Happy Feat - I'm using 0 on the treadmill too, when I tried to move up to 1 my foot wasn't too happy...  guess it just irritates a body part that is healing...  I'm with ya on the running outside at night.. Smile

Laurie - congrats to your DD!  so how is the hamstring these days??

                        Debbie - hey!

Off to treadmill on last day of the 2nd week.. which is 6/1 runwalk 3 times..

                          Good morning, all.

I slept in and am working on coffee after a long phone visit with my sis in Scotland. I'll be running OUTSIDE today! I'm optimistically planning on a 6-mile run at an especially pretty part of the nearby bike trail. My ongoing problem is I get sucked into computer-land on weekend mornings and it starts raining before I get out there! But I can't just get up and go - my body needs time to warm up. That's my excuse anyway; although I find that sitting in front of the computer really does little to warm up my muscles. Hmm.

Linda you are doing fantastic on your program.  Good for you!

Laurie, can you send me your "worry story" too? I'm a worrier and could use some relief.

Hope everyone has a great day today.

Added at 2:30 pm  Run went beautifully. Sunshine breaking through clouds, patchy BLUE sky overhead - very energizing conditions. Took it very slow and easy, with close attention to my posture. (I tend to lean forward, which creates imbalances and problems.) Ran the whole 6 without having to stop and stretch. I'm icing my right calf now and looking forward to tomorrow's outdoor run already.

The Pace Bunny is my Sole Mate.

Happy feat. My email is laddoms@comcast.net. I cant find an email link on your profile. Otherwise I would email my story. I should just post it here since this gang already knows I am 'out there'. Imagine how much we could get done if we just took time away from computer and email. But I have an excuse...I am stuck here at work and its slow.

Linda, go easy on the hills. Incorporate them after you have rehabbed.

                            Laurie....will attempt a run today.

Laurie - very hard to avoid the hills when you live in the foothills of the mountains....  but am going to go into town & go on the bike path today which has less hills...  yesterday's 6/1 runwalk on the treadmill  went very well Smile

                                hi guys

Linda,  hey.  Wink.   I'm doing ok, thanks!  so glad to hear your dad is doing better.  Let us know how he is when you know more.  If you think it wouldn't sound weird to him, let him know that we all are thinking about him.  You are doing great!  yippee.   How'd it go outside today?

HappyFeat I know just what you mean.   The computer is kind of like a black hole. Very glad yesterday's run went so well!  I'm working on posture too.  well, always am, but more focused for about 6 months now.  Do you lean from the waist? I think I do that, at least a little.    I've been trying some things from PT (for my S/I joint) which seem to help if I am persistent enough... a variation on the navel to spine thing, they tell you to pull your front hip bones together (sounds weird, but it sort of works).

Kevin, too bad about the flutter!!  just when you're in bootstrap mode.  Did you start your plan yesterday?  I am the same way about habits, at least a lot of them.  ..I think the bad ones take less energy, you think?  then we need to apply force to create momentum so we can have the good kind of inertia.  ;-)

Laurie,  yay things are going better for you.  pie & a bf.  !

                                hi Mike.  how are you?

and hi to Roberta & Francesre..    haven't heard from you in a while, I hope everything is well.

Eliz, how goes the training plan?   How was your solo?

I ran 11 miles this morning & it went well.  I ran with a friend, which made a big difference in the perception of time.  I wouldn't want to do it all the time, or even often. but it was nice for a change.
