Masters Running

Weekly Newbies - all runners welcome - good times here (Read 1501 times)

    Good morning all!

DG - 11 miles, that's fantastic! Good for you.

It does seem to go easier and faster when you're visiting with a running buddy; although it seems like a long time ago for me. MY DH gave up running sometime this last year. The trade-off has been that my mileage has increased and I don't feel like I'm dragging an unwilling participant along, but I miss having the shared activity with him - after 25 years of doing so. He says he's happier, so I guess it's a win-win, but I have yet to see the evidence of that.

RE: posture  Yes, I do lean forward from the waist along with raising my shoulders -not all the time and mostly outdoors - doesn't usually happen on the TM. So I mentally remind myself "shoulders over hips"  and "relax the shoulders."  That works for me.

My good news for the day is this morning DH fixed the Weather Station that stopped working when we installed a ceiling and insulation in the garage a few months ago. Somehow we must have crimped a wire that goes from the information display box mounted on the garage wall to the sensors on the rooftop. I really like knowing what the outdoor temp, windchill, and wind speed and direction are before going out - and I've really really missed it. (Although not so much recently since the Bogey Man has been stopping me from running at night; but that won't last forever.)  I also like to know if the temps are cold enough for ice on the roads when I drive to work in the morning (the worrier in me) and that time of year is almost here . So I'm very appreciative of our little weather monitor.

Debbie - cool on the 11 mile run with a running buddy!  Just found out  he has another infection in his fingers... ugh.. IV antiobiotics every 8 hours.  At least he's getting it at home, and doesn't have to be in the hospital.

HappyFeat -  oooh that weather monitor sounds nice.. wish I had one.  My DH won't get me anything like that, because he figures I'd never go outside in the winter...  lol   did I mention I don't like the cold.

Did 3 mile run in town today (part on the bike path).  Legs wanted to go faster than my stamina.... ah I remember this Big grin  had to take 3 different .1 walk breaks to get me from 1.5 to 3 miles.  Apparently, that brought me back to the pace/stamina  I'm really at (i.e. the treadmill).  Good news though, the foot just wanted to run today!

Happyfeat, I think you could use some chirunning. It tells how to lean and all about your form. Dont bend at waist or hips. The pivot is at the ankle. Relaxed upper body. Theres lots to learn.I just emailed you my far out worry story.

LInda, are you following the program plus some? I know about hills. Here they are all over the place. I have to make an effort to find a flat run. Do take it easy.

Deb, sounds like your marathon recovery is going well. 11 miles is awesome! I had a feeling you were going to be back up to big miles soon.

Hi everyone else. How are you?

I ran 5 I think today. I think it was 5 because I ran it in 49 minutes which is way too fast for a 5 miler for me so it might have been a bit under 5.

Shin splints that went away. I think maybe i am over pronating. I felt strong. Leg was about the same...strong but a little painful in the injury area. Iced and now no pain at all.

Yep...  I just can't resist. Big grin   Today I was a good girl and did the program on the treadmill - 7/1 runwalk, 3 times.  It felt good Smile    Going down to see my dad this weekend, so I'll be running outside a couple of times..

Happyfeat, did I scare you off with that story?

Deb, hello. And hows the runs coming?

Mike, Kevin, L's, same as above.

Linda, In CA? Just enjoy the runs and views and warm weather. Hows your foot?

My leg is doing fine. All in all I think I am about 80% back to normal. Only say 80% because when I run the pain sneaks in there but then goes away right after I stop running. Stil get shin splints. Any advice?

Yep, going down for Thanksgiving and to see my dad..  its suppose to be in the 70's woohoo!!  I'm gonna be warm! lol   Foot is fine running, but am still needing to ice it afterwards, otherwise I have a little inflammation.   But, it is nowhere near how it used to be, so its all good Smile

Happy Thanksgiving! Hope everyone has a great day off work and a pleasant run to celebrate the day.

Laurie - Thanks for sharing your "worry story" with me. I sent you an email in reply, but maybe you didn't get it. The internet doesn't always work the way it should. Anyway, your story has a strong message regarding how we create some of our own distress. I agree. It's a hard habit to break though. Sometimes I use affirmations (for myself or others) as "thought substitution" to redirect myself from useless worry.  For example, if DH is having a bad day I might picture him in my mind and say "May you feel calm."  "May you feel peaceful."  It seems to help both of us actually.

As for running,  my two 6-milers in a row felt fine, but I took the next day off since I had some muscle/tendon complaints when I tried to run.  Last night I walked for 5 minutes as a warmup and then ran 4 miles and was fine. I rarely walk or take days off, but a warm-up walk and rest days are strongly recommended in the "Running After 50" book I'm reading.  I thought I'd test it out. It's not that I never take a day off - just never on a day I really want to run.

I'm reconsidering the wisdom of a 30 MPW goal -  right now, it may be too much too soon. So I think I'll fall back to my original goal of the 2000K Pace Bunny Group. That I feel is doable. Maybe just by meeting that goal, I'll have built up the conditioning to pursue the 30 MPW goal for next year.

Happy feat, glad I didnt scare you away. Now you know how out there I really am. Oh well. I like your suggestions for peace!! Bend is at the ankle. Dont slouch. Straight up and down. Head looking at ground about 20 feet in front of you. relax relax relax! congrats on the weather station. Makes me feel good that I am not the only geek on this board.

                  Happy thanksgiving to  all.

Manchester was succesful! Ran strong and ran the whole way. I can run strong and feel good alone. Besides my best running partner ever, Kim, came and thats all that matters!

Hey all - hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!  gorgeous weather here in Socal & so nice to be around family for Thanksgiving (26 of us), today & tomorrow are to be spent with my dad Smile

Oh yeah running.. lol..  3 miles yesterday straight through on flat ground.  Maybe I just know how it works on the flat ground better. anyway, it went exactly as planned (well except I was only going to do 2 miles, but it felt so good at the end of 2, I went another mile)  Big grin

Oh Linda, are you not sticking with the program? Do you want to be in the dog house with me? I know, its hard to cut the runs short in CA. But dont injure yourself.

No news here. Except that since the holidays season has started my stress level quadrupled or maybe more. Yuck. One advice is always have your ipod on you in public places to combat the Christmas music. If I hear santa baby again I am going to yak.

                      aka kameele

Hi all.  Happy post turkey day to everyone.  Mine was pretty good.  we went to Mom's new house (1 year now) in Westfield and even got DS the hermit out of his room for the day.  i could do without the two hour drive each way, but travelling mid afternoon on Thanksgiving made for no traffic, so minimum pain.  I miss the leftovers when we eat away, but DW bought a little (20lbs) turkey and cooked it today, so I got to gorge myself twice and now we get all the yummy leftovers.

Still no running and not nearly enough of all the cross training going yet.  got to get better at it.

DD got to spend the day with a friend from school family.  Their house has a view of the HOLLYWOOD sign.   good choice in friends, I guess.  Just about to watch UCLA vs USC to see if she shows up on camera.

Next?  Could there be 26.2 somewhere???

                        I can dream, can't I?

                        In the meantime--Ukrops' 10K March 31st.

I"m still around, not running or even walking anymore. But life is settling down (shhh, don't want to say that too loud), and I plan on starting again. Probably will have to go all the way back to w1 of C25K. But I do feel better when I "run,"

and DD has challenged me anew to take care of myself first.

I'm also watching Biggest Loser which is motivating me too.

Bigest loser worries me. I mean one loser lost 50 some odd lbs in a month. Isnt that a little too much. And run marathons. And I heard they had one death so far.

L's glad to see you back.

Kevin (snubby), HHMMPPHH!!! You come all the way out to Westfield and dont get together for a run..

3 miles today. Fairly painless. No residual pain.

Laurie, I'm glad your run was fairly painless!   I've never watched the biggest loser.

Roberta, if it puts you in a mindset to take care of yourself despite all obstacles (!) then that's a good thing!  It's good to hear from you.

Kevin, I'm trying to shift my schedule around to make sure I get in my pt exercises.   my target time has been failing me for months.   sooooo, I'm a little slow on the uptake. big surprise there.   latest version (as in, started this morning) is to do just a few before I run.  the other plan, before bed, was a dismal failure.  but it used to work.  just took about a year to figure out I needed to try something different.    And so... what is your plan?     cool about DD's view.  Wink.   Does your mom like her house?

Linda, how are you after that last run??   Are you back home?  Back on the plan?  (going off once in a while keeps us sane)(or so I like to think)   How is your dad?

Hi Happyfeat.  I was thinking the other day, (I schedule that at least once a quarter. ;-) )   it must be really hard to have to make these changes!  I didn't start running till I was 51, & so although there are challenges, it's a whole different thing!  I do agree, warm up walks really make a difference.  I've tried both ways.   I agree with you that affirmations and thoughts in general are very important.  One thing I try to watch... it's easy to be stressed because we are stressed.  (e.g.).   does that make any sense?   and then it just compounds the situation.  I'm trying to relax (a work in progress!) regardless of my situation, esp. since things are really stressful right now.  But we can make it better, or worse.  might as well make it better.  I really like reading how you adjust your plans as time goes on.  I hope you stick around.   How are your muscles/tendons now?

I did a cut back week last week, might have said that already, sorry.  but my running is finally feeling good again.  Love that so much I can hardly stand it.  Wink.    LR was just 8.  This week, I'm sort of making up my plan as I go along... haven't been able to settle into any in particular.  thinking 12 for Sunday.  I tried to go really easy yesterday for 6+;  today was 5.35 w/11 fartleks, then a zippy walk/run with Sadie when I got home.  It's almost impossible to fit than in & get to work, but it makes her so happy!  She smiles from ear to ear (you know how dogs do that..) & jumps all over the place.

Mike.  so you aren't speaking to us????   you ok?

Francesre,  I hope you are ok too.

eliz, cool things are picking up.   It seems to me, in my limited experience, that the start of a marthon plan is sort of strange. it often starts us out lower than our previous mileage.  so be patient.  it will all fall into place!

My mind has gone blank looking at all this empty space in the message box....must be late and I must be tired.

Here is a link to the funniest story I have read in quite a while. It totally cracked me up. Maybe because I could so easily see myself in the story.  Hope you enjoy it as well.

                                http://www.runnersworld.com/article/1,7124,s6-380-383-492-13262-0,00.html

I'm not having a high mileage week, but I'm still keeping up with my Pace Bunny - yaay! I'm still walking the first 5 minutes of my runs and am surprised at how much more comfortable start-up is on those days when I otherwise might be a bit stiff (though I'd be the LAST one to ever admit it). I only did 5 milers last weekend instead of 6's - can't recall why now; but anyway had to take Monday off for a doctor appt with DH. So Tuesday, well-rested, I did a 6 with a few miles of increased speed, followed by only 3 milers the next two days because of lower leg complaints probably from overdoing it and I didn't take the time to ice or massage. My own fault.

I'm going to use a coupon and get an hour massage on Saturday...sooo looking forward to that. My back and legs could really benefit. This is it for me for now. Hope everyone is having a good week and taking good care of themselves as we enjoy the holiday season.

PS: Laurie, how did you come to be the "flyin Hawaiian" ?
