Talking to myself again, lol..  thought I'd report today's run.  Ran 2.3 on the treadmill & actually got up to 5.0 for a few minutes Smile  ahhh so excited for the possiblities in running.
Today is simply gorgeous here. I did my 7 miles on the bike trail  and decided to relax and enjoy the run by not monitoring my pace as I went along. I took four 1-minute walk breaks and otherwise cruised along comfortably. My slow speed kept my achilles and left hamstring quiet.  Although I was tired at the end, I was singing along with my iPod on the last mile. I plan to add a mile every Saturday until I get to 10 miles. Then I think I'll stay there for a couple weeks or so and see how I feel before another series of increases. Along with this, I'm going to make Wednesday night a 6-miler with 4s on M, W, F, and Sunday and Thursday off. Friday may become a shorter day eventually. I think this will work out well. I've also stuck with my New Years resolution to work out with weights, although the frequency has varied from 1 to 3 times per week so far.

The Pace Bunny is my Sole Mate.

Linda, sorry youre coming here and talking to yourself. I will keep up better in the future. I promise. Dont fire me. Whats going on with your son at school? Have you considered home schooling? Thats what my DD14 is doing. All online and with a tutor for her writing. Just works out better for her.  My leg hurts sometimes into the run and sometimes after. And sometimes not at all. I know i am aggravating it by running when it hurts. But I have stopped pushing myself and have no race goals or other goals I have to meet. So its all good. Plus I hate winter running. So I will be content to just swim and hang out until spring and the thaw comes.

Happy. I think it was beautiful all over the country yesterday. Just try not to run too much. 4 times a week is a lot. Are you crosstraining?

Hello to the rest of you.

        Laurie (butt still hurts)

        Bridge of Flowers 10k Aug

          Good Morning,

Linda, I am so glad that you were finally able to figure out what was causing all of your breathing problems.

happyfeat, good for you on the running without a watch, and lifting weights.

Laurie, Sorry about your butt.  You know what I recommend?  Hot tub, sushi and alcohol.

Deb, I don't know what tiny pics is.  I can make my pics tiny, but I don't think that's what you are talking about.

I have been talking about bicycling in order to help with knee strength and cross training to help me with the trail running.  So, I took my bike to the bike shop, where they tuned it up and sold me a bunch of crap to go with it.  So, yesterday I had a chance to ride.  I went ONE MILE.  ONE MILE and my legs were jello.  I thought I should get a little credit for the fact that I do some running.  But, no.

This morning I planned to run 6 miles.  Raining, 48 degrees.  But that's OK because I've run in the rain before.  I ran ONE MILE, and my legs are still jello from yesterday.  I cut the run down to 5 miles, but it wasn't pretty.  At least I showed my legs who's boss.

          Cheers,

          MIke

Hi, I'm Happy from The Running Planet

I'm from a different planet where running too much would be anything over 7 days per week. It kills me to draw up a plan for only running 5 days a week. My MIND wants to run every day, even if my decrepit body can't. On my planet, we don't have a word for crosstraining; there's only running.  Doesn't weight training count?? Those are the only two kinds of exercising I enjoy.

HappyFeat - lol  yes it counts.  I only like running too..  but with my foot I can't, right now 3 times a week, but prefer to do 4 times a week.

Mike -  hey 5 miles is 5 miles, jello legs or not Smile  Tiny pics I think is a picture website, isn't it?

Laurie - ADHD related issues..  school is threatening online school if things aren't in better control.  Today he started meds which should help.  Problem is he does not have initiative to do on his own, I would need to work at maximum part time if that was going to happen.  Plus he needs to learn to function in the real world.  For him, these will be issues as an adult and these types of problems, he needs to learn from these types of situations.

I know your daughters sitch is different.

I ran 4 miles outside today! woohoo.. 12:49 average pace.. 6 seconds faster than last week, and 3/4 miles farther.. patience, patience on the times.  I'll get there.

              dg.

                you will!!   Big grin

I hope the meds help your DS.  This sure is a tough one.   It sounds like you have a good sense of the situation...   I can't imagine having to make the day to day judgment calls that this requires, trying to weigh all the factors.  ((( )))

Happyfeat, waves to you & to your planet.  ;-).   sounds like a happy place!     I do think the plan you described sounds good.  maybe if you can follow it & somehow not think about it... keep nutty busy in the meantime which probably isn't hard to do,  you can do this & stay happy & pain free.    Sure weight training counts!

JelloMike... good job!   You get extra points when you're jello, esp. in the rain.   yep like Linda said tiny pics is a website... tinypics.com.   You click on browse & find your (already resized!) image, then upload.  select the box that says something like 'for message board', copy the text.   Select the picture tool in the reply box on RA, & paste the text in it, except take out the IMG's & the exta http://

Laurie too bad your hip hurts.   what kind of hurt & where?       Does it bother you when you swim?

I've aggravated something again but guess what???   (You never will.)   I actually cut back immediately.   really.  I'm not kidding.   Big grin.      Tuesday I did 7 miles + striders, & the striders hurt.  my S/I joint had been out again but I was waiting to get it adjusted because PT was ending... anyway, it wasn't a good idea.   Plus it wasn't smart to do 4 when the first one hurt & I was in a lot of pain that day & the next.    But anyway....   Fri. I started to run & stopped after .25 miles.  (even after going to the river to run)   Yesterday I crosstrained, but did only half of what I planned.

As an example, I stopped at 8:42 minutes (something like that) on the bike because I realized it really hurt.    Maybe we finally learn, you think?  my hope is that I will get this over with quickly & get back to business.  Tomorrow I'll try to run, but will do it at the gym so that I can shift gears easily if it doesn't work out.

                Roberta how are you doing?

                Kevin, yippee you're running!

                aka kameele

Not trying to one up you, Linda,  but 4.3 miles for me today--really nice day, about 32º.  I think you've had a little more to come back from.

Nothing hurt during or after, so I was really happy.  I've now already done more miles than Nov.   Tomorrow I go to my free training assesment at the gym so I can try not to hurt myself on all the machines.  Tried several yesterday on the "weak as a kitten" setting.  I knew I was out of shape, but didn't realize quit how far.

Mike--totally different set of muscles.  But I guess you know that now

Next?  Could there be 26.2 somewhere???

                  I can dream, can't I?

                  In the meantime--Ukrops' 10K March 31st.

Kevin and Linda: Thrilled to hear you both had such satisfying runs today

Mike: 5 miles on JelloLegs is great!

Laurie: How often do you get to go swimming? It's so different from running that maybe it will help resolve your muscle problems. They seem so random it makes me wonder if there's some underlying issue like nutrition or hydration or hormones or stress or who-knows-what.

That's a funny description of your status, Kevin - "weak as a kitten". You'll make progress fast though. Just a few short weeks ago when I picked up my hand weights for the first time in a long while, I picked up the #3 ones to do the chest exercises and basically set those muscles on fire for about a week. Now I'm using #5 ones pain-free and ready to move up to #8 (maybe). I started with #5 for most of the arm and shoulders and am using #8 and #10 now.  You'll see. After about a month or so, you'll be very pleased with your progress.

Hi Debbie  So do you still have an upcoming PT appt to get yourself fixed up again?

                      Hello,

4 miles for me this morning.  Legs still felt like they had bricks tied to my feet.

                      Cheers,

                      Mike

Hi everyone, I posted my intro in another forum a few weeks ago, and someone suggested I join this group as my age qualifies me.  I am Gina, from Sandy Hook CT.  I ran a lot from 1991-1993  and after I did the NYC marathon, I just stopped...too much too soon and burned out.  I decided recently to pick it up again, and took the advice on this website and slowed everything down.  It's amazing how the body doesn't recover at age 50 like it did at 33!  I am doing the c25k program and find that I really need the days off in between.  I'm doing a second week four this week, and just bought some running tights so I can start to do the long runs outside (the treadmill is soooo boring!)  My goal was a 5k in March, but we'll see, I don't want to rush things.  I really appreciate all the good advice I'm getting here, thanks for having me.
                        dg.

welcome Gina!   congrats on your taking up running again,     How is week 4 going?    What did you think of the NYC marathon?  I've heard it is quite an experience.     It will be interesting to hear more of your comparisons of running now to running then.

It's really nice to have you will posting here..  sometimes we don't keep up too well but we catch up eventually!

Mike, did you take off the bricks yet?

Happyfeat, thanks, but no, my last pt appt. was Fri.  ... it's a little ironic to have some of the same problems I had when I started,  .    At least I'm not quite as bad as I was then!  I know more about what to do.   How are you doing on your plan?

Laurie, did you hike over the weekend?

Yesterday I tried using the balls for tissue release like I mentioned to you before.  It seems like it's a good thing to do, but I'm never sure if I have them in the right place.

                          Linda, update, ok?

Frances  & Roberta, I hope you're both doing ok.

I'm being careful & making slow progress.  Monday was 3 miles & 30 min. on the elliptical, with some weights, tues. just a little core work, today was 5 miles, 20 min. on the elliptical & just 1 weight machine.

so tired, & working on the cobol program from hell, so I'd better go!

                          naptime!

Welcome Gina! So glad to have you join our group.

                            Hello to everyone else

JelloMike: 4 miles is still good. Have you tried massage/CPR to revive your legs?

Debbie: I feel like I'm in confession You guessed it - I was stoopid for what is it?  the third week in a row now? This time what happened was that instead of taking the scheduled day off after the long run, I ran 3 miles because I was afraid that another commitment on Tuesday night would prevent me from running and I didn't want to get behind the bunny!   I swear, next week I am not deviating from the plan.  I really should have taken the complete rest day  and have had the expected soreness. I should be fine tor tonight's 6-mile run, but will shorten it if not. Well I think I've learned all my lessons by now. Let's hope I don't have to make any more "confessions" in the future.

The Pace Bunny is my Sole Mate.

                            aka kameele

Is this a boy-girl thing?  I feel ABSOLUTELY no guilt in taking a rest day.  In fact, they're the highlight of the training week.  Especially since Mr Higdon only gives you one a week   And I'm only in the second week.

I had a good evaluation with the trainer at the gym (which I like, BTW)  he ran through a few of the cable machine vs the ones with a fixed path.  He said the variability in them helps with stability.  also ran through some flexibility stuff and foam rolling.  all in all worthwhile.  Oh, and he measured my % body fat--I was 23% which falls in the normal range.  he suggested 17% as a target, which by his calcs means I need to get rid of 15lbs IF I don't gain any muscle in all this working out.  We shall see--weight loss is not an actual goal--I think it should be a side effect.  Besides which--I would be shaped like a broom stick at 175.

Plan said 2 miles or x-train this morning, so I did 2.15 with the yaks on at a much better clip than I thought.  not downloaded yet, so actual time I don't know.  Felt good though.  I may add more details on HR later, if I don't think you'll be TOO bored.

Already 1/2 hour late leaving from work (Stoopid meetings) so have a good night and good runs.  and REST days, ladies.

Next?  Could there be 26.2 somewhere???

                              I can dream, can't I?

                              In the meantime--Ukrops' 10K March 31st.

                                Good evening,

I don't feel guilty about a rest day either.  Actually, I didn't feel too bad about a couple of rest months there toward the end of this past year.

4 miles this morning.  felt pretty good.

                                Cheers,

                                Mike
