College admission "likely" letter (Read 301 times)

Yesterday DD got a letter from Cornell saying she was a strong candidate and would probably be offered admission when the decisions go out at the end of March.     I guess they can't officially let applicants know early, so this is an unofficial acceptance?  Kinda weird - I've never heard of these letters. I really hope this means she's accepted because it would stink to get a "likely" letter then get rejected. From what I've gathered they're usually sent to athletes (which DD is not) but also sometimes to academic prospects.  Anyone familiar with these?

I hammered down the trail, passing rocks and trees like they were standing still.

Carolyn---These types of early notification letters are becoming more common. It gives Cornell a chance to say we want you to attend and may prompt the accepted party to give an indication that you will indeed accept the offer. It's not binding like early decision and in this day and age when students are applying to many more schools all at once, it gives the college/university a bit more information about who will say yes in turn. It also helps them manage a waiting list if they need to go to that.

It's all good and congratulations to your daughter and to all of you. Mr. CNYrunner worked in college admission for many years and I work in higher ed.consulting---most of our clients use some sort of early notification process to get an edge on the competition.

Good Luck with the next phase of decision making and congrats again!

Congratulations!  You got me with this one!  I have worked at universities my whole adult working life and I have never heard of such letters.  But I cannot imagine they would go out only to be followed by a rejection letter.  Imagine the (really, really bad) publicity that would bring a school!
